Avast Mobile Security for iOS - Getting Started

Avast Mobile Security is an app designed to protect your privacy online, securely store your photos, block dangerous websites, and alert you if your online accounts or email addresses have been leaked online.

After installing Avast Mobile Security, the app scans your Wi-Fi network and prompts you to resolve any detected issues. Refer to the sections in this article to learn how to set up and use Avast Mobile Security on your iOS device.

If you have a paid subscription for Avast Mobile Security Premium, ensure you have activated your app to be able to follow along in all of the sections below.

Run a Smart Scan

When you open Avast Mobile Security, you have the option to run a Smart Scan, which checks your device for any potential threats. To start the scan:

  1. Tap the Avast Mobile Security icon on the Home screen of your device. The app opens.
  2. Tap Run Smart Scan on the main Avast Mobile Security screen.
  3. Tap Resolve and follow the on-screen instructions to resolve any issues found.

For detailed instructions on how to solve the found issues, refer to the sections below.

You may require an Avast Premium Security subscription to resolve some of the issues, such as turning on VPN Secure Connection.

Turn on Web Shield

Web Shield runs in the background while you browse the internet. When Web Shield is enabled, Avast Mobile Security helps block fake websites that are trying to trick you by impersonating legitimate sites. A local VPN (Virtual Private Network) is required to enable this feature. To enable Web Shield:

  1. Tap the Avast Mobile Security icon on the Home screen of your device. The app opens.
  2. Under Your browsing is not secured/Web Protection is Off, tap Turn on.
  3. Tap Next twice, then tap Enable.
  4. If prompted, tap Allow to add VPN Configurations.

Web Shield is now enabled.

To disable Web Shield, tap More info, then tap Turn off Web Shield.

Enable VPN Secure Connection

VPN Secure Connection (previously called Wi-Fi Protection) uses our VPN (Virtual Private Network) infrastructure to create an encrypted and private VPN connection. This helps to protect the data you upload and download from the internet and helps to keep your internet activity private. VPN Secure Connection is available as part of an Avast Mobile Security Premium subscription. To activate VPN Secure Connection:

  1. Tap the Avast Mobile Security icon on the Home screen of your device. The app opens.
  2. Under VPN Secure Connection, tap Turn on.
  3. Tap Next twice, then tap Enable.
  4. If prompted, tap Allow to add VPN Configurations.

VPN Secure Connection is activated and connected to the closest server location.

The following options are also available via VPN Secure Connection screen:

  1. Turn off VPN: To temporarily turn off the VPN, tap Turn off on the VPN Secure Connection screen.
  2. Change location: You can connect to servers in any of our available locations. Tap the Server location tile, and select a different location from the list.

Activate Data Breach Monitoring

Data Breach Monitoring helps to keep your online accounts safe by seeking to ensure none of the passwords linked to your email address have been leaked online. If a leak is found, Data Breach Monitoring immediately notifies you and prompts you to change the password that was compromised. To activate Data Breach Monitoring:

  1. Tap the Avast Mobile Security icon on the Home screen of your device. The app opens.
  2. Under Secure your online accounts, tap Add email.
  3. Tap Next twice.
  4. Enter your email address, then tap Scan breaches.
  5. After the scan completes, refer to the information below according to the message you see on the results screen:
    • No compromised accounts: We have not found any data breaches involving your online accounts.
    • Compromised accounts: We have found that at least one of your online accounts has been involved in a data breach. We recommend you immediately change the passwords for all accounts listed under Compromised accounts. Tap a breached account, then tap Change password to follow the on-screen instructions to change the account's password.
  6. To actively monitor leaked data connected to your email address, tap Turn on breach alerts ▸ OK.

Data Breach Monitoring is now active and continuously checks for new data breaches involving this email address.

Free users are only able to monitor one email address at a time. Paid users are able to monitor 5. To add another email address, tap More info ▸ Scan for new email, then follow the instructions above, starting at step 4.

To remove an email address, tap More info on the Data Breach Monitoring tile, then swipe left on the email address and select Remove twice.

Add Email Guardian

Email Guardian is a premium feature only available in the paid version of the app (Avast Mobile Security Premium). Email Guardian can cover up to 5 email accounts.

Email Guardian is a paid feature which scans your incoming emails. When you check them using a web browser, every new email is labeled as either , or .

To learn about how to set up and use the feature, refer to the following article:

Use Photo Vault

Photo Vault helps protect your photos and images from prying eyes by moving them to a passcode-protected, encrypted vault on your device. Up to 40 photos or images from your device or camera can be added to the vault. With an Avast Mobile Security Premium subscription you can store an unlimited number of photos or images in Photo Vault. To set up Photo Vault:

  1. Tap the Avast Mobile Security icon on the Home screen of your device. The app opens.
  2. Under Hide your private photos, tap Add photos.
  3. Tap Next twice, then tap Enable photo vault.
  4. Create a four digit access code that you will use to sign in to your Photo Vault. Type it twice to confirm.

Your passcode is set. Now every time you open Photo Vault you are prompted to enter your passcode to gain access to the vault.

If your device has Touch or Face ID capability, you have the option to enable this functionality after you have set up a passcode. If you choose to enable Touch or Face ID, this will replace your passcode for accessing Photo Vault.

Add photos to Photo Vault

You can add existing images to your Photo Vault from the Photo Library on your device, or use the camera on your device to take a photo and import it directly into your Photo Vault. To add images to Photo Vault:

  1. Tap the Avast Mobile Security icon on the Home screen of your device. The app opens.
  2. Under Hide your private photos, tap Add photos.
  3. Enter your passcode.
  4. Tap Add photos.
  5. Select either Photo Library or Camera:
  1. To give Avast Mobile Security permission to access your Photo Library, tap Select Photos... to manually choose the photos, or tap Allow Access to All Photos.
  2. Tap a photo to select it, then tap Import.
  3. Optionally, tap Delete to remove the photo from your photo library.
  1. Tap OK to give Avast Mobile Security permission to access your camera.
  2. Take a photo, then tap Retake or Use Photo and tap OK.

Your photo is imported into Photo Vault.

Share or delete files from Photo Vault

  1. Tap the Avast Mobile Security icon on the Home screen of your device. The app opens.
  2. Under Your photos are hidden, tap Open vault and enter your passcode.
  3. Tap Select.
  4. Tap the photo(s) you want to share or remove from the vault. A green border appears around the selected photo(s).
  5. Tap the relevant option:
    • Share icon: Send the selected file(s) to another location, for example via AirDrop, email, or message.
    • Trash icon: Permanently remove the file(s) from Photo Vault.
If you uninstall Avast Mobile Security, any photos you have stored in Photo Vault will be deleted along with the app and there is no option to restore them. We recommend exporting your files from Photo Vault before uninstalling the app.
