Quarantine - Getting Started

Quarantine is a safe place in Avast Free Antivirus and Avast Premium Security for storing potentially harmful files and completely isolating them from the rest of your operating system. Files in Quarantine cannot be accessed or run by any outside processes, software applications, or viruses.

By default, files are moved to Quarantine in the following ways:

  • If you run a predefined Avast Antivirus scan and it detects a suspicious file.
  • If an active Avast Antivirus shield detects a suspicious file.

Alternatively, you can move files to Quarantine manually.

Access Quarantine

Access Quarantine in one of the following ways:

  • Open Avast Antivirus, then go to Protection ▸ Quarantine.
  • In the notification area of the Windows taskbar, right-click the Avast icon and select Quarantine.

Move files to Quarantine

Avast Antivirus automatically moves malicious files to Quarantine if they cannot be repaired.

You can customize the default actions in the individual settings for each antivirus scan or shield. For more information, refer to the following articles:
  • Adjusting settings for Avast Virus Scans
  • Adjusting settings for Avast Antivirus Core Shields

To manually add files to Quarantine:

  1. On the Quarantine screen, click Add file....
  2. Locate the file you want to move to Quarantine, and click Open.

The file now appears in Quarantine and you can send it for analysis.

Restore files from Quarantine

Restoring files from Quarantine poses a high security risk. This action requires advanced user knowledge and is only intended for specific situations (for example, if a critical system file is accidentally moved to Quarantine).

To move a file out of Quarantine:

  1. Tick the box next to the relevant file(s) in Quarantine.
  2. Click … More options (three dots), then select an action:
    • Restore: Moves the file to its original location on your PC.
    • Restore and add exception: Moves the file to its original location, and adds the file to your exceptions list to exclude it from all Avast Antivirus scans and shields. To view your exceptions list, go to ☰ Menu ▸ Settings ▸ General ▸ Exceptions.
    • Extract: Moves the file to a chosen location on your PC.
  3. Click Close.

Submit files to Avast Threat Labs

You can send files to Avast Threat Labs for further analysis. We recommend sending the following file types:

  • Potential malware: Files that Avast Antivirus has not identified as malware, but you believe may be malicious.
  • False positive: Files that Avast Antivirus has identified as malware, but you believe may be clean.
In most cases, Avast Threat Labs will process the file without sending a response to you.

To submit a file to Avast Threat Labs:

  1. Tick the box next to the relevant file(s) in Quarantine.
  2. Click … More options (three dots), then select Send for analysis.
  3. Select either Potential malware or False positive and enter any additional information about the file into the text box, then click Send.

If you are submitting a False positive, specify the Program name, Program publisher, Program version number, and the reason why you believe the file or program should not have been detected.
  4. Click Close.

Delete files from Quarantine

This action permanently deletes files from your PC and cannot be undone.

To permanently delete a file from Quarantine:

  1. Tick the box next to the relevant file(s) in Quarantine.
  2. Click Delete all or Delete selected at the bottom of the Quarantine screen.
  3. Click Yes, delete to confirm.

The file is now deleted from your PC.

Manage Quarantine settings

By default, Quarantine is allocated a maximum space of 5120 MB, which you can change in Quarantine settings. To configure Quarantine space allocation:

  1. Click Settings (the gear icon) in the top right corner of the Quarantine screen.
  2. Click in the text box, and redefine the maximum size for your Quarantine.

The Quarantine space allocation is now changed.

Quarantine is a safe place in Avast Security and Avast Premium Security for storing potentially harmful files and completely isolating them from the rest of your operating system. Files in Quarantine cannot be accessed or run by any outside processes, software applications, or viruses.

By default, files are moved to Quarantine in the following ways:

  • If an Avast Security scan detects a suspicious file and you confirm that the detected file should be moved to Quarantine.
  • If an active Avast Security shield detects a suspicious file.

Alternatively, you can move files to Quarantine manually.

Access Quarantine

To access Quarantine, open Avast Security and click the Quarantine tile on the main screen.

Move files to Quarantine

When Avast Security detects a suspicious file during a scan, the detection appears in the scan report. To move a file to Quarantine, tick the box next to the file, then click Resolve Selected or Resolve All.

The file is now moved to Quarantine.

By default, threats detected by File Shield are automatically moved to Quarantine. For information on how to adjust File Shield behavior, refer to the following article:
  • Managing Core Shields in Avast Security or Avast Premium Security for Mac

Suspicious files can also be manually added to Quarantine by following the steps below:

  1. Click Quarantine on the main Avast Security screen.
  2. Click Add file....
  3. Locate the file on your Mac using the Finder window, then click Open.

The selected file is added to the list of files in Quarantine and you can send it for analysis.

Restore files from Quarantine

Restoring files from Quarantine poses a high security risk. This action requires advanced user knowledge and is only intended for specific situations (for example, if a critical system file is accidentally moved to Quarantine).

When you restore a file from Quarantine, Avast Security moves the file back to its original location. Alternatively, you can restore the file to another location on your Mac. To restore a file from Quarantine:

  1. Tick the box next to the relevant file(s) in Quarantine.
  2. Click … More options (three dots), then select Restore or Restore as.
  3. If you selected Restore as, use the Finder window to choose a new location for the file, then click Open.
  4. If prompted, use your Touch ID or click Use Password and enter the password you use when you start your Mac. Then click OK.

The file is restored and can now be opened from the selected location on your Mac.
