Avast SecureLine VPN for Windows and Mac - Getting Started

Avast SecureLine VPN allows you to connect to the internet via secure Avast VPN servers, which protects your connection and ensures your privacy.

This article assumes that the latest version of Avast SecureLine VPN is installed and activated on your device. For detailed instructions, refer to the following articles:

Connect to the VPN

Avast SecureLine VPN can be used any time you want to connect to the internet with extra security and privacy, and is especially recommended when you are connected to a public or unsecured wireless network.

To connect to Avast SecureLine VPN:

  1. Double-click the Avast SecureLine VPN icon on your Windows desktop to open the application.
  2. Click the red (OFF) slider so it changes to green (ON).
  1. Click Go in the menu bar, select Applications, then double-click the Avast SecureLine VPN icon to open the application.
  2. Click the red (OFF) slider so it changes to green (ON).
  3. If prompted, click Allow to grant Avast SecureLine VPN permission to add VPN configurations.

You are now connected to the Avast SecureLine VPN default server. You can change the default VPN server location if needed.

Connect to a different location

Avast SecureLine VPN has servers in several locations, which means you can bypass geolocation restrictions as well as access your favorite content while traveling.

To connect to a different location:

  1. Click Change on the main Avast SecureLine VPN screen.
  2. Optionally use the side menu to view all of the servers in a specific continent, servers that offers P2P connection, or servers that are optimized for streaming.
  3. Select a country. For countries that offer multiple cities, click the down-arrow and select your preferred city.

To connect to a different location:

  1. Click Change on the main Avast SecureLine VPN screen.
  2. Optionally use the side menu to view all of the servers in a specific continent, servers that offers P2P connection, or servers that are optimized for streaming.
  3. Select a country. For countries that offer multiple cities, click the down-arrow and select your preferred city.
  4. If prompted, click Allow to grant Avast SecureLine VPN permission to add VPN configurations.
  5. Click Change Location to confirm the change.

Your location now shows as the country and city that you selected.

Manage settings

To open Avast SecureLine VPN settings:

  1. Click to MenuSettings.
  2. Select the relevant tab in the left panel to adjust the settings below.

VPN Mode

The options that you see in this section vary according to Your VPN Mode:

When Manual is enabled:

  1. Turn on the VPN: Configure settings related to when Avast SecureLine VPN automatically connects, or prompts you to connect using Avast VPN servers. For more information, refer to the following article:
  2. Kill Switch: Enable Activate Kill Switch to block your internet connection if Avast SecureLine VPN servers unexpectedly disconnect. This ensures that your online activity always remains private.
  3. Other: Tick the box next to Enable local device access when using VPN if you want to interact with local devices and shared drives while you are connected to a Trusted (private) network.

When Smart VPN is enabled:

  1. I connect to unknown networks: Smart VPN automatically connects when it detects a connection to an unknown or unsecure Wi-Fi network. If the VPN connection is lost unexpectedly, Smart VPN pauses the internet while it works to reconnect to the VPN server. To enable or disable this option, click the panel to expand it and tick or untick the box next to Unsecured network.
  2. I use peer-to-peer file sharing: Smart VPN automatically connects to the fastest server available if you are using a P2P service. To enable or disable this option, click the panel to expand it and tick or untick the box next to Torrenting.
  3. I browse online: Click the panel to expand it and tick or untick the following options according to your preferences:
    • Banking: Avast Smart VPN automatically connects when you shop online, or use online banking.
    • Streaming: Avast Smart VPN automatically connects to the fastest server available when you are streaming content online.

General

  • Show status notifications: Receive notifications that inform you when Avast SecureLine VPN connects or disconnects.
  • Startup: Automatically open the Avast SecureLine VPN user interface each time you start your PC.
  • Language: Change the language in which the Avast SecureLine VPN user interface is displayed.
  • Become a beta tester: Receive updates to the application version before they are released to the public.

To open Avast SecureLine VPN settings:

  1. Click to MenuPreferences.
  2. Select the relevant tab in the left panel to adjust the settings below.

General

  • Show Avast VPN notifications: Receive a notification each time Avast SecureLine VPN connects or disconnects.
  • Show Avast VPN in the menu bar: Open Avast SecureLine VPN and check your privacy status via the menu bar icon.
  • Start Avast VPN when my computer starts: Automatically open the Avast SecureLine VPN user interface each time you start your Mac.
  • Show offers for our other products: Receive notifications about other Avast products that might interest you.
  • Receive beta updates: Opt to receive updates to the application version before they are released to the public.

Network Security

  • Turn on the VPN: Configure settings related to when Avast SecureLine VPN automatically connects, or prompts you to connect using Avast VPN servers. For more information, refer to the following article:
  • Activate Kill Switch: Block your internet connection if Avast SecureLine VPN servers unexpectedly disconnect. This ensures that your online activity always remains private.

Browser integration

The Avast SecureLine VPN browser extension is an extra installable component that allows you to conveniently control Avast SecureLine VPN behavior directly from your Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox web browser.

The Browser extensions option only appears when you have Google Chrome and / or Mozilla Firefox installed on your Mac.
