Creating scan reports in Avast Antivirus

Avast Antivirus can generate scan report files after you run a scan on your PC. These scan reports are used to identify a false positive or locate malware. You may be requested to provide a report file, including the relevant scan report, when troubleshooting issues with Avast Support representatives. Scan report files need to be enabled for each scan individually by following the steps below.

Configure scan report

  1. Open the Avast Antivirus user interface.
  2. Select MenuSettings.
  3. Select General from the left menu and click next to Smart Scan to expand the panel. Select Customize to open scan settings.
  4. Select ProtectionScans.
  5. Click Settings located under the Full Virus Scan or Targeted Scan tile.
The boot-time scan does not support customization to the report, and always creates a full report automatically after it is run.
  6. Select the Custom scans tile and click the gear icon ▸ Settings next to the relevant scan in the list.
  7. In the scan settings window, click the Report file tab.
  8. Tick the box next to Generate report file to create a report of the scan results.
  9. Manage the following settings:
    • File name: provide a name for the report file.
    • File type: select the format of the report file - plain text ANSI, plain text Unicode, or XML.
    • If file exists: select Append if you want new results to be added to the end of the previous report, or Overwrite if you want new results to replace the previous report.
  10. Define the contents of the report:
    • Infected items: files and areas of the scanned environment identified as malware. This option is ticked by default.
    • Hard errors: unexpected errors that require further investigation. This option is ticked by default.
    • Soft errors: minor errors, for example, a file that wasn't scanned because it was in use while the scan was running.
    • OK items: files and areas identified as clean. Ticking this option results in very long reports.
    • Skipped items: files and areas not scanned due to exclusions in the scan settings.
  11. Click OK.
