Automatically enabling Avast SecureLine VPN when connected to an unsecured Wi-Fi network

Avast SecureLine VPN allows you to connect to the internet via secure Avast VPN servers, which protects your connection and ensures your privacy. This article explains how to enable Avast SecureLine VPN to automatically turn on when your device is connected to an unsecured Wi-Fi network.

This article assumes that the latest version of Avast SecureLine VPN is installed and activated on your device. For detailed instructions, refer to the following articles:

Enable auto connect

To automatically turn on Avast SecureLine VPN when you are connected to an unsecured Wi-Fi network:

  1. Double-click the Avast SecureLine VPN icon on your Windows desktop to open the application.
  2. Click MenuSettings.
  3. Ensure VPN Mode is selected in the left panel.
  4. Follow the relevant directions below according your VPN Mode:
    • Smart VPN: Click the I connect to unknown networks panel and ensure the box next to Unsecured network is ticked.
    • Manual: Tick the box next to Automatically when connected to the Internet. If you do not want Avast SecureLine VPN to turn on automatically when you are connected to a trusted (private) network, ensure the box next to Exclude Trusted (private) networks is also ticked.

Avast SecureLine VPN now turns on automatically when your PC connects to an unsecured Wi-Fi network. An unsecured network is any network that is not on your list of trusted (private) networks.

Smart VPN is only available on PCs running Windows 10.
  1. Click Go in the menu bar, select Applications, then double-click the Avast SecureLine VPN icon to open the application.
  2. Click MenuPreferences.
  3. Select Network Security in the left panel, then tick the box next to Automatically when connected to the Internet.
  4. If you do not want Avast SecureLine VPN to turn on automatically when you are connected to a trusted network, ensure the box next to Exclude is also ticked.

Avast SecureLine VPN now turns on automatically when your PC connects to an unsecured Wi-Fi network. An unsecured network is any network that is not on your list of Trusted Networks.

  1. Tap the Avast SecureLine icon on the Home screen of your device to open the app.
  2. Tap Settings (the gear icon) ▸ Auto Connect.
  3. If prompted, tap Connect to VPN and follow the on-screen instructions to allow Avast SecureLine VPN to connect.
  4. Select When I connect to unsecured Wi-Fi. If prompted, tap Allow and follow the on-screen instructions to allow Avast SecureLine VPN to access your location.

Avast SecureLine VPN now turns on automatically when your device connects to an unsecured Wi-Fi network. An unsecured network is any network that is not on your list of Trusted networks.

  1. Tap the SecureLine icon on the Home screen of your device to open the app.
  2. Go to Settings (the gear icon) ▸ Auto Connect.
If the Auto Connect option is unavailable, Avast SecureLine VPN may not have permission to connect automatically. To grant the necessary permissions, tap Connect on the main app screen and follow the on-screen instructions.
  1. Select When I connect to Wi-Fi.

Avast SecureLine VPN now turns on automatically when your device connects to an unsecured Wi-Fi network. An unsecured network is any network that is not on your list of Trusted networks.

Add a trusted network

You can add private networks, such as your home or work Wi-Fi, to your list of Trusted (private) networksTrusted NetworksTrusted networks. These trusted networks are excluded from your VPN auto-connect settings.

To add your current network to your list of trusted (private) networks:

  1. Click MenuSettings.
  2. Ensure VPN Mode is selected in the left panel.
  3. Ensure Manual is selected on the VPN Mode screen.
  4. Click Current Network Profile....
  5. Click the slider next to your current Wi-Fi network to set it as Private.

Your current network now appears on your list of Trusted (private) networks.

To add your current network to your list of Trusted Networks:

  1. Click MenuPreferences.
  2. Click Network Security in the left panel.
  3. Click Trusted Networks....
  4. Click Add To Trusted Networks next to your current network.

Your current network now appears on your list of Trusted Networks.

To add your current network to your list of Trusted networks:

  1. Go to Settings (the gear icon) ▸ Trusted networks.
  2. Tap the + plus icon next to your current network.

Your current network now appears on your list of Trusted networks.

To add your current network to your list of Trusted networks:

  1. Go to Settings (the gear icon) ▸ Auto Connect.
  2. Tap Trusted networks.
  3. Tap the + plus icon next to your current network.

Your current network now appears on your list of Trusted networks.
