Set up and use Avast Cleanup Premium on Microsoft Windows.

Avast Cleanup Premium is a PC optimization tool. The program scans your PC to identify issues that may be taking up space or interfering with performance and allows you to select which issues are removed or resolved.

This article provides instructions and recommendations for first-time users of Avast Cleanup Premium and describes how to use several key program features to immediately get started optimizing your PC.

This article assumes that the latest version of Avast Cleanup Premium is installed on your PC. For detailed instructions on installing the program, refer to the article below:

Welcome to Cleanup

After installation, the program loads automatically. The following options are available from the welcome screen:

  1. Unlock All Features: Purchase a paid Avast Cleanup Premium subscription. If you have already purchased a paid subscription, follow instructions in the article below to activate it:
  2. Scan Now: Trigger a Maintenance scan of your PC. The Maintenance scan is a comprehensive scan that checks for the following issues:
    • Broken registry items
    • Broken shortcuts
    • System junk
    • Browser cache
    • Tracking & other cookies
    • Browsing & download history
  3. Skip: Go to the main Avast Cleanup Premium dashboard and manually select a scan tile. For more information about the different scans included in Avast Cleanup Premium, refer to the article below:
If you do not purchase a paid subscription, you can continue to use the program in scan-only mode. Scan-only mode allows you to scan your PC for issues, but you need to purchase a paid subscription before resolving any found issues.

Access the Avast Cleanup Premium dashboard

After installation, the Avast Cleanup Premium dashboard is accessible using one of the following methods:

  • Double-click the Avast Cleanup Premium icon on your Windows desktop.
  • Right-click the Avast Cleanup Premium icon in your Windows system tray and select Avast Cleanup.

Perform a Maintenance scan

  1. Click the Maintenance tile from the main Avast Cleanup Premium dashboard, then wait while Avast Cleanup Premium scans your PC. The scan may take a few minutes to complete.
  2. Select which issues you want to resolve by ticking or unticking the box next to each issue type. Issues Avast ticks automatically can be safely resolved without losing crucial data.
View additional information about an issue by hovering your cursor over the issue panel.
  1. Click Fix & Clean to resolve selected issues.
  2. When cleaning is complete, click Done to confirm and return to the main Avast Cleanup Premium dashboard.
You may be prompted to enable Automatic Maintenance if you have not already enabled this feature. Refer to the section below for more information about Automatic Maintenance.

Enable Automatic Maintenance

After running your first Maintenance scan, you are prompted to enable Automatic Maintenance. This allows Avast Cleanup Premium to regularly scan your PC and remove any found issues automatically with no actions required from you. To enable Automatic Maintenance, click Turn On in the dialog that appears after running a Maintenance scan.

If you skip this step, enable Automatic Maintenance at any time by following the steps below:

  1. In the Maintenance tile on the main Avast Cleanup Premium dashboard, click OFF next to Automatic Maintenance.
  2. At the top of the Automatic Maintenance Settings screen, click the gray (OFF) slider so it changes to green (ON).
  3. Specify which items Avast Cleanup Premium has permission to remove during Automatic Maintenance by ticking or unticking listed issues. Issues Avast ticks by default contain only dispensible items that can be safely deleted.
  4. Click the X icon to return to the main Avast Cleanup Premium dashboard.

Prevent applications from running in the background

Certain applications slow down your system by running silently in the background. Avast Cleanup Premium scans for these applications and allows you to safely put them to sleep to boost performance.

  1. From the main Avast Cleanup Premium dashboard, click Speed up.
  2. Click Show below Background & startup programs.
  3. A list of applications that may be slowing down you PC appears. The following options are available:
    • Click the green Sleep button next to an application to put it to sleep.
    • Click Ignore to remove an application from the list and allow it to continue running in the background.
    • Click Put all to sleep to put all listed applications to sleep.
If you use an application on a daily basis, we do not recommend putting it to sleep. Additionally, certain applications need to run in the background to offer full functionality. For example, if you put Skype to sleep, you may miss incoming calls.
  1. Click the back arrow to return to the main Avast Cleanup Premium dashboard. You can manage ignored or sleeping applications at any time from the Background & startup programs screen.

When you open a sleeping application, its status changes to Temporarily Awake, allowing you to continue using the application as normal. When you close the application, Avast Cleanup Premium automatically returns its status to Sleeping.
