Scanning your Mac with Avast Security

Avast Security for Mac provides a range of scans to protect your Mac from malware and network threats. You can also create your own scan with parameters specified by you.

Refer to the sections in this article for details about available scan options.

Access the Scans

To open the Scan section in Avast Security for Mac:

  1. Click the Avast Menu bar icon and select Open Avast from the context menu.
  2. Select Scan.

Run Full System Scan

To run a predefined, in-depth scan of your system that checks your storage drives and memory for malware:

  1. Click Start next to Full System Scan.
  2. When the scan completes, review the scan results.

Run Removable Volume Scan

To scan any removable storage devices that are currently connected to your PC, such as external hard drives, USB flash drives, CDs, and DVDs:

  1. Click Start next to Removable Volume Scan.
  2. Select the volume you would like to scan and click Start.
  3. When the scan completes, review the scan results.

Run Custom Scan

To run a custom scan with your personalized settings:

  1. Click Start next to Custom Scan.
  2. Select a file or a folder to scan.
  3. When the scan completes, review the scan results.

Run Home Network Security Scann

Home Network Security Scan scans your router and all devices connected to your network for vulnerabilities and identifying potential security problems that open the door to threats.

  1. Click Start next to Home Network Security Scan.
  2. When the scan completes, review the scan results.

The devices that are being scanned appear under the scan progress bar.

Schedule scan

To create a scheduled scan:

  1. Click Schedule next to Scheduled scan.
  2. Use the drop-down menu under Select scan type to select which scan you want to schedule.
  3. Use the drop-down menu under Launch to select how often the scan runs (Weekly is selected by default).
  4. Select a launch date and time.
  5. Click Create scan.

The scan appears under Scheduled Scan in the main Scan section.

Adjust scan settings

Although customizable settings are available for some predefined scans, we recommend you only modify settings for Custom Scan.
  1. Click Settings in the section of the scan you want to customize.
  2. Tick your preferred areas to scan.
  3. In the Excluded paths section, you can set an exclusion for a file or a folder that you do not want to scan:
    1. Click the plus icon.
    2. Select a path to a file or a folder to exclude it and click Choose to confirm.

View previous scan reports

  1. Open Avast Security and select Reports from the left panel.
  2. Click the arrow next to one of the following options to expand the section:
    • Virus Scan Reports: displays results of Full System Scan, Removable Volumes Scan or Custom Scan.
    • Home Network Security Scan Reports: displays results of Home Network Security Scan.
  3. To see details of a particular scan, click Open.

You can select to send the detected files to the Virus Chest or delete the files (if they have not already been moved or deleted). For detailed instructions, refer to the following article:
