How is my data protected when I sync Avast Secure Browser?

Avast uses end-to-end encryption, which encrypts your data locally on the device and remotely in the Avast data center. Encryption works by changing your data to random characters, ensuring that absolutely nobody can read your data except you (including Avast).

You can only read encrypted data if you have access to the specified encryption key. You can choose the encryption key that protects your Avast Secure Browser data via your sync settings:

  1. Open Avast Secure Browser, then click the Current user icon to the right of the address bar.
  2. Click Settings (the gear icon).

Your credentials are stored both locally on your device and remotely in the Avast data center. This means that you retain access to your encrypted data if you need to change your Avast Account password. Your encryption key is stored in a protected vault in the Avast data center, which prevents Avast from accessing it.
    • Sync passphrase: Nobody can read your encrypted data without access to your passphrase. You are prompted to enter your passphrase each time you add a new device to your sync group. The passphrase is only stored locally on your device and is not stored remotely in the Avast data center. This means that if you forget your passphrase, Avast cannot reset it.
