Avast SecureLine VPN for Windows and Mac - Getting Started

Avast SecureLine VPN enables you to connect to the internet via secure Avast VPN servers, which protects your connection and ensures your privacy.

Install and activate

Connect to the VPN

Avast SecureLine VPN can be used any time you want to connect to the internet with extra security and privacy, and is especially recommended when you are connected to a public or unsecured wireless network.

To connect to Avast SecureLine VPN:

  1. Double-click the Avast SecureLine VPN icon on your Windows desktop to open the user interface.
  2. Click the OFF slider so that it changes to ON.
  1. Click the Avast SecureLine VPN icon in your menu bar and select Open Avast SecureLine VPN.
  2. Click the red (OFF) slider so it changes to green (ON).

You are now connected to the Avast SecureLine VPN default server. You can change the default VPN server location if needed.

Connect to a different location

Avast SecureLine VPN has servers in several locations, which means you can bypass geolocation restrictions as well as access your favorite content while traveling.

To connect to a different location:

  1. Click Change on the main screen of the Avast SecureLine VPN interface.
  2. Select your preferred country or city, then click Change Location.

To connect to a different location:

  1. Click Change on the main screen of the Avast SecureLine VPN interface.
  2. Select your preferred country or city, then click Change Location to save the change.

If certain websites claim that you are connected to a different city than the city you selected as your VPN location, refer to the following article:

Manage settings

To open settings:

  1. Open Avast SecureLine VPN and click MenuSettings in the top right of the user interface.
  2. Adjust settings in the sections below by clicking the relevant tab in the left panel:

VPN Mode

  • Your VPN Mode: select Manual to control when Avast SecureLine VPN connects and disconnects, or select Smart VPN to allow avast SecureLine VPN to connect and disconnect automatically.
  • Smart VPN is only available in Windows 10.
  • Turn on the VPN: configure settings relating to when Avast SecureLine VPN automatically connects, or prompts you to connect to a VPN. For more information, refer to the article below:
  • Activate Kill Switch: enable this option to block your internet connection if Avast SecureLine VPN servers unexpectedly disconnect. This ensures that your online activity always remains private.

General

  • Notifications: receive a notification each time Avast SecureLine VPN connects or disconnects.
  • Startup: automatically opens the Avast SecureLine VPN interface each time you start your PC.
  • Language: specify in which language the Avast SecureLine VPN interface is displayed.
  • Become a beta tester: receive updates to the application version before they are released to the public.

Browser Integration

  • Browser extensions: install the Avast SecureLine VPN browser extension, which allows you to conveniently control certain aspects of SecureLine VPN behavior directly via your preferred web browser. For more information, refer to the article below:
  • Avast Secure Browser: download Avast Secure Browser to use Avast SecureLine VPN directly in the browser.

  1. Click the X icon to save your settings and return to the main Avast SecureLine VPN screen.

Your Avast SecureLine VPN settings are now updated.

To open Avast SecureLine VPN settings:

  1. Click the Avast SecureLine VPN icon in your menu bar and select Open Avast SecureLine VPN.
  2. Click Preferences (the gear icon) on the right of the screen.
  3. Adjust your preferred settings:
    • General:
      • Show Avast VPN notifications: receive a notification each time Avast SecureLine VPN connects or disconnects.
      • Show Avast VPN in the menu bar: open the Avast SecureLine VPN interface and check your privacy status via the menu bar icon.
      • Start Avast VPN when my computer starts: automatically open the Avast SecureLine VPN interface each time you start your Mac.
      • Show offers for our other products: receive notifications about other Avast products that might interest you.
      • Receive beta updates: receive updates to the application version before they are released to the public.
    • Network Security:
      • Turn on the VPN: configure settings relating to when Avast SecureLine VPN automatically connects, or prompts you to connect to a VPN. You can also add to your list of Trusted Networks. For more information, refer to the article below:
      • Kill Switch: enable this option to block your internet connection if Avast SecureLine VPN servers unexpectedly disconnect. This ensures that your online activity always remains private.
    • Subscription: check details relating to your current subscription cycle. Click Manage Account to open My Subscriptions in the connected Avast Account, where you can view additional details and manage your subscription. If you don't have an Avast Account, click Create an account.
    • Pair New Device: Activate Avast SecureLine VPN on your Android TV with device pairing.
