Excluding certain files or websites from scanning in Avast Antivirus

Although it is generally not recommended, you may want to exclude certain files, folders, or websites from scanning to speed up your scans or to avoid false positive detections. You can do this by adding individual files, entire folders, and websites to the exceptions list. Items on your exceptions list are excluded from all scans and shields.

Set exceptions only if you know that the files and websites you want to exclude are not infected. If you are unsure about a file, you can scan it in Virus Total, or add the file to the Virus Chest and submit it to Avast Threat Labs. For more information about the Virus Chest, refer to the following article:

Add an exception

  1. Open Avast Antivirus and go to MenuSettings.
  2. Select GeneralExceptions.
  3. Click Add Exception.
  4. Add an exception in one of the following ways:
    • Type the specific file path, folder path, or URL into the text box, then click Add Exception.
    • Click Browse, tick the box next to the file or folder you want to exclude, then click OK.
    • Click More, type the Process Name and Command Line Parameters, then click Add Command Line Exception.
Adding a Command Line exception allows you to exclude all files on your hard disk drive that have the same file name, even though the files are located in different folders.

Your specified file, folder, or URL is added to the exceptions list.

Manage the exceptions list

After adding a file, folder, or website to your exceptions list, you can view and individually remove any item from the list.

  1. Open Avast Antivirus and go to MenuSettings.
  2. Select GeneralExceptions.
  3. To view all exceptions, ensure the boxes next to File/Folder, Website, and Command Line are ticked. The exceptions list is visible below these filters.
  4. To delete an item from the list, hover your cursor over the panel for the exception you want to delete, then click the trash icon. The list updates automatically.

Your updated exceptions list is visible.
