What is the difference between Avast One and Avast One Free?

Avast One Free includes comprehensive Avast Antivirus protection, and limited access to Secure Connection (VPN) and Data Leak Monitoring.

Avast One includes all the features from Avast One Free, unlimited access to Secure Connection (VPN) and Data Leak Monitoring, and additional features such as Sensitive Data Shield, Real Site, and App optimizer.

Avast One Free includes comprehensive Avast Antivirus protection, and limited access to Secure Connection (VPN) and Identity protection.

Avast One includes all the features from Avast One Free, unlimited VPN access and Identity protection, and additional features, such as automatic scans and cleaners that help boost your device's performance.

How does Avast One protect my device?

Avast One includes features such as File Shield, Web Shield, and Firewall. When these features are enabled, Avast One works continuously to detect potentially malicious files, websites, and networks from interacting with and infecting your PC.

For now, you can continue to update and use Avast Mobile Security as normal.

Can I use my subscription on multiple devices and platforms?

Avast One is currently only available on Windows PC, Android, and iOS devices. The following Avast One subscription types are available:

  • Individual: protects up to 5 devices simultaneously.
  • Family: protects up to 30 devices simultaneously. An Avast One Family subscription also includes the Family Sharing feature (available via your Avast Account), which allows you to share your subscription with up to 5 other people. What are the system requirements for Avast One?

  • Windows 10 except Mobile and IoT Edition (32 or 64-bit); Windows 8/8.1 except RT and Starter Edition (32 or 64-bit); Windows 7 SP1 with Convenient Rollup Update or higher, any Edition (32 or 64-bit)
  • Windows fully compatible PC with Intel Pentium 4 / AMD Athlon 64 processor or above (must support SSE2 instructions); ARM-based devices are not supported
  • 1 GB RAM or above
  • 2 GB free space on the hard disk
  • Internet connection to download, activate, and maintain program updates and antivirus database
  • Optimally standard screen resolution no less than 1024 x 768 pixels
Avast One is not supported (is not compatible, cannot be installed, and will not run) on DOS, Microsoft Windows editions earlier than Windows 7, Microsoft Windows Server operating systems, or any others not specified as supported.

Do I need to uninstall previous Avast products before I install Avast One?

No. If you already have an Avast Antivirus application installed on your PC, you are prompted to upgrade to Avast One. If you have separate, paid subscriptions for other standalone Avast products, you can continue using them without interruption.

How do I activate Avast One?

To activate Avast One, refer to the following article:

Manual activation for Avast One Free is not required. After you install the application, your subscription activates automatically.

Can I transfer a subscription to another device?

You can activate an Avast One (Individual) subscription on up to 5 devices simultaneously, or an Avast One (Family) subscription on up to 30 devices simultaneously. Check your Avast Account or order confirmation email to confirm which subscription type you purchased. To transfer a subscription to another device, follow the steps below:

  1. Uninstall Avast One from your device.
  2. Install Avast One on your new device.
  3. Activate Avast One on your new device.

Features

What is File Shield?

File Shield scans programs and files saved on your PC for malicious threats in real-time before allowing them to be opened, run, modified, or saved. If malware is detected, File Shield prevents the program or file from infecting your PC.

What is File Scan?

File Scan scans personal files saved on your device for malicious threats. To run a File scan:

  1. Open Avast One on the Home screen of your device.
  2. Tap the Device Protection tile.
  3. Tap File Scan.

What is Deep Scan?

Deep Scan checks every part of your Android device, not just individual files or folders, for potential security vulnerabilities and malware. To run a Deep Scan:

  1. Open Avast One on the Home screen of your device.
  2. Tap the Device Protection tile.
  3. Tap Deep Scan.

What is Web Shield?

Web Shield scans data that is transferred when you browse the internet in real time to prevent malware, such as malicious scripts, from being downloaded and run on your PC. Web Shield can also block websites, enable https scanning, and protect against botnets designed to hack your data or remotely control your PC. You can also enable Web Shield to change your digital fingerprint automatically while you browse the internet, by going to Device protectionWeb Shield, then ensuring the box next to Anti-fingerprinting is ticked.

Web Shield warns you when it detects that you are trying to visit a dangerous website on your device. To enable Web Shield:

  1. Open Avast One on the Home screen of your device.
  2. Tap the Device Protection tile.
  3. Tap the slider next to Web Shield so that it changes from white (OFF) to green (ON).
  4. If prompted for permissions, tap Open SettingsAccept, then follow the on-screen instructions to grant permissions.

Web Shield warns you when it detects that you are trying to visit a dangerous website on your device. To enable Web Shield:

  1. Open Avast One on the Home screen of your device.
  2. Tap Start Web Shield.

What are Malware Shields?

The Malware Shields are the main protection components of Avast One on your Android device. To enable all Malware Shields, open Avast One, go to Device Protection, and tap Malware shields. This feature is comprised of the following individual shields:

  • App Shield: alerts you if you try to install an app that Avast One detects as malware.
  • File Shield: alerts you if a malicious file or program is detected on your Android device.
  • Low reputation apps: alerts you if you attempt to install an app that other Avast users have reported as malware or potentially dangerous.
Some shields may require you to enable permissions in your device settings.

What is Ransomware Shield?

Ransomware Shield secures your personal photos, documents, and files from being modified, deleted, or encrypted by ransomware attacks. This feature scans for and automatically secures folders that may contain personal data, and allows you to specify other folders you want to protect from untrusted applications. Additionally, you can specify which applications are allowed to modify the files in your folders and which applications are always blocked.

What is Firewall?

Firewall monitors all network traffic between your PC and the outside world to protect you from unauthorized communication and intrusions. Firewall prevents sensitive data from leaving your PC and can block hacking attempts.

You can also block network and internet communication for specific applications. Firewall then blocks connection whenever the particular applications try to establish a connection to the internet or with another network.

What is Virus Chest?

Virus Chest is an isolated space where you can safely store potentially dangerous files, or send them to Avast Threat Labs for analysis. Files in Virus Chest cannot run or access your system and data, so any malicious code contained within a file is unable to harm your PC.

What is Smart Scan?

Smart Scan is a comprehensive scan that detects the following issues on your device:

  • Viruses: files containing malicious code that may impact the security and performance of your device.
  • Vulnerable software: out-of-date software that hackers can use to access your system.
  • Bad browser add-ons: browser extensions that are usually installed without your knowledge and affect the performance of your system.
  • Poor search engines: default search providers that may offer poor search results or endanger your privacy.
  • Network issues: vulnerabilities in your network that may lead to attacks on your router and network devices.
  • Security vulnerabilities: potential security gaps in device or app settings.
  • Performance issues: items such as junk files and unnecessary apps, or settings issues that may interfere with the operation of your device.

Can I exclude files, folders, or websites from scanning?

Yes. You can exclude specific files, folders, and websites from being scanned by all Avast shields and scans. To set an exclusion:

  1. Click the User icon ▸ Settings.
  2. Scroll to Exceptions, and click Add exception.
  3. Type a file path, folder path, or URL, then click Add exception. Alternatively, click Browse, select a file or folder path, and click OK.

Your specified file, folder, or website is now listed on the Exceptions screen. To remove an exception, hover the cursor over the listed exception, then click the trash icon that appears.

Does Avast One scan webmail accounts?

If you use a web-based email account, such as Yahoo or Gmail, Avast does not directly scan your emails. However, Web Shield and File Shield actively protect your PC from malware that could be contained in your email messages.

What is Browser Cleaner?

Browser Cleaner is a feature integrated into Smart Scan.

When you run Smart Scan, Avast scans your PC for various elements, including poorly rated browser add-ons. If such add-ons are detected, you can follow the on-screen instructions to remove them. You can also remove cached browser data from the Browser Cleaner screen anytime.

What is Secure Connection (VPN)?

Secure Connection is the method that a Virtual Private Network (VPN) uses to connect to the internet. A VPN functions as a private tunnel through the internet, which encrypts your data and secures your connection when using public Wi-Fi networks, such as those in cafes or airports. Avast One has servers in several locations, which means you can bypass geolocation restrictions and access your favorite content while traveling.

A limited version of Secure Connection is included in Avast One Free, but changing your default location and using more than 500MB per week require a paid subscription. If you already have a paid Avast SecureLine VPN subscription, the Secure Connection feature within Avast One Free will not be limited, but you may need to reinstall both Avast One Free and Avast SecureLine VPN. Refer to the the following article section for instructions:

What is Wi-Fi scan?

Wi-Fi Scan checks the networks you're connected to for security risks. You can Scan Wi-Fi manually, or enable Auto-scan Wi-Fi to scan every new network you connect to automatically.

Auto-scan Wi-Fi can only be enabled if you have a paid Avast One subscription.

What is Data Leak Monitoring?

Data Leak Monitoring is an advanced privacy feature that prevents your personal data from being exploited for profit, and alerts you if your information is leaked online.

To use Data Leak Monitoring, enter the email address you want to monitor, then click Check for leaks.

Data Leak Monitoring is included in Avast One Free, but checking for data breaches with more than one email address requires a paid subscription.

What does the Personal Identity tile do?

The Personal Identity tile allows you to monitor your online accounts, and notifies you if an account email or password is compromised. To add an email address and begin your identity protection:

  1. Open Avast One on your device's Home screen.
  2. Tap the Personal Identity tile.
  3. Enter an account email address you want to monitor, and tap Check For Breaches. Wait while Avast One checks your email address for data breaches or leaks.
If Avast One finds any data leaks associated with your email account, we recommend you change your account passwords for the detected leaks immediately to avoid further issues.
  1. Select Add account to see details to continue monitoring the email address, or select Done to return to the main Personal Identity screen.
  1. Open Avast One on your device's Home screen.
  2. Tap the Personal Identity tile.
  3. Tap Add Email Address, enter an email address you want to monitor, then tap Add Email.
If Avast One finds any data leaks associated with your email account, we recommend you change your account passwords for the detected leaks immediately to avoid further issues.

Your email address is now being monitored by Avast One. Adding a second email address requires a paid Avast One subscription.

What is Disk Cleaner?

Disk Cleaner scans for and safely deletes files that may be using a large amount of disk space on your PC. To delete junk, select the files types you want to scan, and click Clean.

What is Software Updater?

Software Updater keeps common third-party software up to date to eliminate potential security risks. Malicious threats or attackers often use leaks in outdated software to access your PC. Software Updater displays the most popular programs installed on your PC and allows you to easily update all outdated software.

What does the Smooth Performance tile do?

The Smooth Performance tile includes features that ensure your device is running smoothly by freeing up space and resources, and boosting the overall performance of your device. Open Avast One, then tap Smooth Performance. From there, you can use the following features:

  • Performance Scan: checks your device for junk files and open apps using valuable resources in the background.
  • Automatically free up space: allows Avast One to automatically scan your device, clean junk files, and close background apps every day.

What is Sensitive Data Shield?

Sensitive Data Shield scans and protects your sensitive personal documents against unauthorized access and malware. The files considered sensitive contain your personal information that, if revealed, could compromise your privacy and identity. Sensitive Data Shield controls which applications and users have access to your files to secure your private data.

What is Real Site?

Real Site secures you against DNS (Domain Name System) hijacking. Some malicious programs can stealthily redirect you from an authentic URL to an inauthentic website to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, or credit card details.

Every time you enter the URL (address) of a website, such as www.example.com, into the address bar of your browser, the URL is translated to the IP address (Internet Protocol address) of the web server where the web page you want to access is stored. Real Site provides an encrypted connection between your web browser and Avast's own DNS server to ensure that the displayed website is the authentic one.

What is Webcam Shield?

Webcam Shield prevents applications and malware from accessing your PC's webcam without your consent. With Webcam Shield enabled, untrusted applications cannot capture images or videos and send the content outside of your PC to compromise your privacy.

What is App Optimizer?

App Optimizer scans for applications that are running in the background of your PC, and allows you to safely put them to sleep. This improves the performance of your PC, and reserves its resources for the applications you choose to run.

What is Password Protection?

Passwords stored in web browsers are vulnerable to theft if left unprotected. Password Protection secures your stored passwords against malware and unwanted applications. This feature also allows you to specify which applications have access to reading, changing, or deleting your passwords in Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Avast Secure Browser.

What should I do if Avast One does not accept my purchased subscription?

If you are unable to activate Avast One, check that you haven't exceeded the device limit according to the Avast One subscription you have in your Avast Account, then try to activate the application again. If activation is unsuccessful, follow these troubleshooting steps:

  1. Uninstall Avast One and restart your device.
  2. Download and install Avast One.
  3. Try to activate Avast One again.

Can I get a copy of my purchased subscription?

You can always find your current subscriptions and download the latest product versions via your Avast Account. To learn more about Avast Accounts, refer to the following article:

Can I temporarily disable Avast One protection?

Yes, but we do not recommend doing this permanently. If you need to temporarily disable the real-time protection components in Avast One, right click the Avast icon in the notification area of your Windows taskbar and select Avast shields control. The following options are available:

  • Disable for 10 minutes
  • Disable for 1 hour
  • Disable until computer is restarted
  • Disable permanently (not recommended)

Why can't I download and install Avast One?

Currently, Avast One is only available for download in Australia.

Why isn't my Secure Connection (VPN) unlimited even with a SecureLine VPN subscription?

Avast One Free includes limited access to Secure Connection by default. If you already have a paid Avast SecureLine VPN subscription and you still see that your Secure Connection is limited in Avast One Free, follow the steps below to reinstall both programs and ensure you get unlimited access to Secure Connection via Avast One Free:

  1. Uninstall Avast SecureLine VPN.
  2. Uninstall Avast One Free.
  3. Install and activate Avast SecureLine VPN.
  4. Install Avast One Free again.

The Secure Connection feature in Avast One Free is now unlimited. If you still experience problems after following the steps above, contact Avast Support.

Why isn't my Secure Connection (VPN) connecting?

The Secure Connection feature in Avast One Free may not connect if you already have Avast SecureLine VPN installed and connected on your Android device. If Secure Connection in Avast One Free is already connected and you then connect via Avast SecureLine VPN, Secure Connection in Avast One Free will automatically disconnect.

To ensure your VPN connection remains uninterrupted, we recommend you keep only one VPN enabled at all times.

How can I control which data I share with Avast and third parties?

When you use Avast One, you share anonymous usage statistics and error reports with Avast and third parties to help improve the app. To manage your data sharing preferences, tap the User icon (top-left corner of the main screen) ▸ SettingsPrivacy Settings. Tap the slider next to one of the options so that it changes to green (ON) to opt in, or white (OFF) to opt out.

The following privacy settings are available:

  • Improvements
    • Share threat data with Avast to improve the security of all Avast antivirus users (Community IQ).
    • Share app-usage data with Avast to help us with new product development.
    • Share app usage data with 3rd-party analytics tools to improve this app.
  • Offers
    • Share app-usage data with Avast so we may offer you upgrades or other products.
