Setting exclusions for shields in Avast Security for Mac

While it is generally not recommended, you can exclude certain files, programs, mail servers, or websites from being scanned by Avast Security shields. Exclusions can be useful to speed up scans or to prevent false positive detections.

Refer to the sections in this article for instructions on setting exclusions for Avast Security scans.

To set exclusions for Avast Security shields, use the instructions in the following sections:

Exclude files from scanning

To exclude files, folders, or applications from being scanned by File Shield:

  1. Click the Avast Menu bar icon and select Open Avast from the context menu.
  2. Click Preferences and ensure the Shields tab is selected in the new window that appears.
  3. Click Settings next to File Shield.
  4. Click the plus (+) icon and select a file and/or directory, then click Choose.
    If prompted, enter your administrator credentials and click Install helper.
  5. Click Done.

To remove an item from Excluded paths, select the file or directory path in the list and click the minus (-) icon.

Exclude mail servers from scanning

To exclude mail servers from being scanned by Mail Shield:

  1. Click the Avast Menu bar icon and select Open Avast from the context menu.
  2. Click Preferences and ensure the Shields tab is selected in the new window that appears.
  3. Click Settings in the File Shield section.
  4. Click the plus (+) icon and enter your administrator credentials if prompted.
  5. Enter the mail server and select the service type, then click Add.
  6. Click Done.

To remove an item from Excluded servers, select the server in the list and click the minus (-) icon.

Exclude websites from scanning

To exclude websites or domains from being scanned by Web Shield:

  1. Click the Avast Menu bar icon and select Open Avast from the context menu.
  2. Click Preferences and ensure the Shields tab is selected in the new window that appears.
  3. Click Settings in the Web Shield section.
  4. Click the plus (+) icon and enter your administrator credentials if prompted.
  5. Enter the web server and select the service type, then click Add.
  6. Click Done.

To remove a website from Excluded servers, select the server in the list and click the minus (-) icon.
