Exporting Avast Passwords data and importing it into Firefox

 
The support for Avast Passwords is ending across all platforms, including Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS. Users are encouraged to migrate to the new Avast Password Manager standalone browser extension and the new mobile application. For more information, refer to the following article: Avast Passwords Migration - FAQs.

This article describes how to export your passwords data stored in Avast Passwords and import it into the Firefox browser.

Export data

To export your passwords data from Avast Passwords:

  1. Open Avast Antivirus and select Privacy ▸ Passwords.
  2. If prompted, click Unlock. Then enter your Master Password and click Unlock.
  3. Click Settings in the top right corner.
  4. The Export to Firefox option is currently not compatible with recent changes to the Firefox browser.
    Select Import / export data, then click Export next to Export to Chrome.
  5. Choose a familiar location to save the avast-passwords-chrome.csv file (for example, your desktop) and click Save.

Your passwords data is now exported to a .CSV file and is ready for importing into the Firefox browser.

Import data

There are two possibilities for importing your passwords data into Firefox:

  • From Google Chrome: If you also use Google Chrome, you can first import your data from Avast Passwords into Chrome, and then import the data from Chrome to Firefox.
  • Enable password import: The import passwords feature is currently disabled by default in Firefox, but can be enabled to allow importing a CSV file.

Refer to the steps in the relevant tab below according to your preferred method.

  1. Import your passwords data to Google Chrome as described in the following article:
  2. Open your Firefox browser and click ☰ Menu (three lines) in the top right corner, then select Passwords.
  3. On the Logins & Passwords screen, click … More options (three dots) and select Import from Another Browser....
  4. Select Chrome and click Next.
  5. Untick Browsing History. Tick the box next to Saved Logins and Passwords and click Next.
  6. Click Finish.

Your passwords data has now been imported to Firefox.

  1. Open your Firefox browser and type about:config into the address bar, then press the Enter key on your keyboard.
  2. If prompted, click Accept the Risk and Continue to open the Advanced Preferences screen.
  3. Type signon.management.page.fileImport.enabled into the search box.
  4. Click Toggle to change the value from false to true.
  5. Close Firefox. The import passwords feature is now enabled in Firefox.
  6. Open Firefox and click ☰ Menu (three lines) in the top right corner, then select Passwords.
  7. Click … More options (three dots) and select Import from a File....
  8. Select the avast-passwords-chrome.csv file and click Open.
  9. Click Done.

Your passwords data has now been imported to Firefox.
