What happens if I upgrade to Avast Mobile Pro Plus or Ultimate from my current subscription?

When you upgrade from one paid version of Avast Cleanup to another (for example, from Avast Cleanup Premium to Avast Mobile Ultimate), Google Play Store automatically calculates how much of your original subscription was unused. To compensate you for the value of this unused subscription, you receive free access to the new paid product for a limited time period. This means that you are not immediately charged when you activate your new paid subscription. The length of your free access period depends on how much of your original subscription was unused. Features

What is Quick Clean?

When you tap the Quick Clean button on the main app screen, you see a list of item types that are available to clean. These item types are separated into two categories:

  • Safe To Clean: Data that Avast has carefully selected to ensure that it is truly dispensable, including thumbnails, APKs, residual files, and hidden, visible, and shared cache. All categories are selected by default for cleaning, except Thumbnails.
  • For Your Consideration: Data that may or may not be valuable to you. We recommend reviewing items included in this category and selecting only those items that are dispensable. All items are unticked by default and will not be removed unless you manually select them for deletion.
It is not possible to restore items that are deleted during a Quick Clean, so we recommend using caution when deleting items under For Your Consideration.

Can I control the items that Avast removes during a Quick Clean?

The Quick Clean function was carefully designed to only remove data that is truly dispensable, such as system caches that can be easily replaced, or APK files that are already installed. If you're concerned, you can define the exact items and item types that are processed from the Quick Clean review screen before you run the scan:

  1. Tap the Quick Clean button on the main app screen.
  2. Untick item types that you don't want Avast to process when you run the Quick Clean.
  3. Tap the down arrow next to an item type to view specific items on your device. Untick specific items to ensure they won't be removed when you run Quick Clean.

Can I restore files that are deleted during a Quick Clean?

No. You can't restore files that are deleted during a Quick Clean. This function was carefully designed to only remove data that is truly dispensable, such as system caches that can be easily replaced, or APK files that are already installed.

What is Boost memory?

When you tap the Boost memory tile on the main app screen, you see a list of apps on your device that are running silently in the background. You can then hibernate some or all of these apps. Hibernation stops apps from running in the background when they are not in use, which makes the memory that was occupied by this background activity free for other purposes.

To hibernate apps:

  1. Tap the Boost memory tile on the main app screen.
  2. Tick the apps you want to hibernate, and untick the apps you want to continue running in the background.
  3. Tap Hibernate Apps at the bottom of the screen.

The selected apps are no longer running in the background.

How long do the effects of the Boost memory feature last?

Once an app is hibernated, it usually does not use your memory again until you actively reopen it. However, certain apps may leave hibernation before you actively reopen them. For example, if you hibernate Facebook Messenger and then open the Facebook app, Facebook Messenger is no longer in hibernation.

Is it harmful to hibernate apps using the Boost memory feature?

No. Mobile apps are designed to cope with sudden closures, so stopping apps via the Boost memory feature is not harmful.

What is Tips?

When you tap the Tips tile on the main app screen, you can review 5 tips for clearing space on your device.

To move to the next tip, touch and hold the tip panel, then swipe left.

The first time you use the Tips feature, you are prompted to specify which kinds of tips you want Avast Cleanup to prioritize via the Analysis Preferences screen.

What is Media?

When you tap the Media tile on the main app screen, you can review an overview of the media that is stored on your device, including suggestions for clearing space. The Media Overview screen is divided into the following sections:

  • Photo Analysis:
    • Similar Photos: Groups of photos with nearly identical content, with the highest quality image in each group marked as Best Photo.
    • Bad Photos: Photos that may be out of focus, dark, or of low quality.
    • Sensitive Photos: Photos sent or received via social apps that may be private or sensitive.
    • Old Photos: Photos that were time-stamped a month or more ago.
    • Optimizable: Photos that can be resized to match your device screen, making them smaller and consume less space.
  • Folders: Provides an overview of folders on your device. Folders are arranged in size order, and especially large folders are marked red.
  • Large videos: Identifies any videos larger than 20MB stored on your device.

The Media tool allows you to easily clear space on your device by deleting unwanted media, or alternatively sending items to cloud storage.

What is Apps?

When you tap Apps on the main app screen, Avast Cleanup displays an overview of the apps installed on your device. This data helps you release storage space by identifying apps that it may be beneficial to uninstall or hibernate. The Apps Overview screen is divided into the following sections:

  • Drainers: Identifies apps that may be draining your data and battery.
  • Usage: Displays apps based on frequency of use. You can view Least used, Most used, and Unused apps.
  • Running: Displays the number of apps currently running in the background. Tap Quick Boost to immediately hibernate active apps and release memory for other tasks.
  • Growing: Identifies apps that are occupying more space on your device than previously.
  • Notifying: Identifies apps that have sent you the most notifications in the last 7 days.

What is Photo Optimizer?

You can use Avast Cleanup to optimize your photos by decreasing their pixel size. An optimized photo looks almost the same as the original, while consuming much less space on your device.

To optimize photos on your device:

  1. Open Avast Cleanup and go to Menu (three lines) ▸ Photo Optimizer.
  2. Tap Show Photos and tick the photo(s) you want to optimize, then tap Confirm to return to the main Photo Optimizer screen.
  3. Tap Continue to proceed with default optimization, or tap Setup to preview an optimized image. If you have a paid Avast Cleanup subscription, you can additionally set the optimization level according to your needs. Tap Continue to return to the main Photo Optimizer screen.
  4. Under Original photos, tap Select to specify what will happen to your original photo(s). Options include Just delete, Keep originals, or send originals to cloud storage.
  5. Tap Optimize Now to immediately start optimizing the selected photo(s).

When optimization is complete, tap the back arrow to return to the main Avast Cleanup screen.

Why is the Thumbnails category unticked by default?

Thumbnails are the small versions of pictures used for previews. Deleting thumbnails during a Quick Clean can delete significant amounts of data on some devices, while on others the effect is very limited. For this reason, the category is unticked by default. You can test the effectiveness of this option on your device and decide whether to tick it or not.

What is app data?

App data is accumulated and stored (often unnecessarily) on your device when you use certain apps. Avast Cleanup identifies app data that you can safely remove from your device without compromising the functionality of your apps.

To remove app data from your device:

  1. Open Avast Cleanup and tap Menu (three lines) ▸ Apps.
  2. Select the App Data tab.
  3. Tick the box(es) next to the types of app data that you want to remove, then tap the trash icon in the bottom-right corner.

What are system apps?

System apps are usually pre-installed on your device at system level. Because system apps are necessary for the running of your device, it is not possible to uninstall them. However, Avast Cleanup allows you to either hibernate system apps, or restore them to default factory settings by uninstalling updates.

To manage system apps on your device:

  1. Open Avast Cleanup and tap Menu (three lines) ▸ Apps.
  2. Tap the System tab.
  3. Tick the box next to the app(s) that you want to manage, then tap the icon (three dots) in the bottom-right corner.
  4. Select Uninstall updates or Hibernate.

  • Tracking & other cookies: Data files that record information about the websites you visit.
  • Browsing & download history: The history of visited websites and downloaded files from your browser (this option only removes the list of files and does not delete any files stored on your PC).

Fragmentation occurs when fragments of the same file are stored separately on the hard disk drive. This can slow down your system, as fragmented files take longer to retrieve and access. Disk defrag and optimization improves performance and storage efficiency by re-organizing your hard disk drive to ensure that fragments of the same file are stored together.

Defragging is only recommended if you have an HDD (Hard Disk Drive). If you have a SSD (Solid State Drive), defragging is not necessary or beneficial. Avast Cleanup Premium automatically detects your drive type and only offers to defrag HDDs.

To check if Disk defragging is recommended, go to All functionsDefragment or optimize disks.

What is Disk Doctor?

Disk Doctor is a feature that scans for disk errors caused by corrupted areas on your internal and external drives, then offers to repair found issues. If left unrepaired, corrupted files can cause crashes, unexpected behavior, and loss of personal data.

  • Click Move To Trash to temporarily uninstall the program from your PC. If necessary, you can reinstall a trashed program by clicking Programs trashed at the bottom of the screen.
  • Uninstall to permanently uninstall a program and its components from your system.
  • Ignore to keep the program on your PC. You can manage ignored programs by clicking Programs ignored at the bottom of the screen.

How does Avast Cleanup Premium determine ratings for Unnecessary Programs?

During a Speed up scan, Avast Cleanup Premium scans for unnecessary programs installed on your PC. Click Unnecessary programs after the scan completes to view a list of programs and their ratings (out of five stars). To determine a program's rating, Avast Cleanup Premium uses a cloud-based rating system based on known blocked and allowed lists, heuristic algorithms, Avast's Recommendation Engine, and user ratings. This makes it easier for you to determine which programs you want to keep and which programs you want to remove.

What does Avast Cleanup Premium do with my encrypted files?

Avast Cleanup Premium ignores encrypted partitions and files to ensure your privacy and security. If your entire hard drive is encrypted, Avast Cleanup Premium cannot scan and optimize your system.
