Avast Battery Saver for Windows - FAQs

General

What is Avast Battery Saver?

Avast Battery Saver is a tool that extends your device's battery life by reducing internal and external power demands. Avast Battery Saver allows you to switch between the following modes to effectively manage your battery's power:

  • Maximum: applies our default power-save settings to maximize your battery life.
  • Custom: applies your customized power-save settings to adjust device behavior according to your needs and priorities.
  • Off: turns off all Avast Battery Saver power-save settings, allowing your device to run according to the current Windows settings.

Is Avast Battery Saver a free product?

No. Avast Battery Saver is a paid product that requires a subscription to use. You can purchase an Avast Battery Saver subscription via the Avast website.

How does Avast Battery Saver improve battery life?

When the application is turned on, Avast Battery Saver extends your battery life by lowering processor frequency, optimizing display settings, and limiting unnecessary power drains.

The exact way Avast Battery Saver extends your battery life depends on which power-save mode is enabled. Select your preferred mode via the main Avast Battery Saver dashboard.

Will Avast Battery Saver make my device run more slowly?

Avast Battery Saver does not impact your device's speed and performance unless the application is turned on.

When the application is turned on and Maximum mode is enabled, Avast Battery Saver applies our default power-save settings. This includes lowering your CPU clock frequency and voltage for maximum power savings. With default power-save settings enabled, you may notice that more demanding programs run more slowly than usual. However, you should be able to perform everyday tasks without noticeable drops in speed.

If you need to run more demanding tasks but still extend your device's battery life, we recommend configuring and enabling Custom mode. This allows you to specify precisely how Avast Battery Saver extends your battery life. For example, you can configure Avast Battery Saver to adjust processor performance in real-time according to current system demands, or ensure that Avast Battery Saver does not affect processor performance at all.

How do I configure Custom mode settings?

Configured Custom mode settings apply to your device only when Custom is selected on the main Avast Battery Saver dashboard.

Access Avast Battery Saver Custom mode by going to MenuSettings and selecting the Custom mode tile in the left panel. Click the relevant tile in the left panel to configure the following settings:

  • Screen and display:
    • Screen brightness: specify screen brightness.
    • Adaptive backlight: dims the backlight of your PC while enhancing the image. Maximum savings maximizes battery life, but can cause flickering when you watch videos or play games.
    • Adaptive brightness: automatically adjusts screen brightness based on surrounding light levels. When enabled, this setting drains battery power faster, so we recommend disabling it to extend battery life.
    • Turn off display after: specify after what period of inactivity your display turns off.
    • Desktop background settings (Slideshow): disable or enable special Windows desktop settings, such as transparency and slideshows, which are big power drains.
  • Hardware and Devices:
    • Processor performance: determine how processor performance is prioritized:
      • Maximum savings: power savings are always prioritized over processor performance. Avast Battery Saver lowers CPU clock frequency and voltage for maximum power savings.
      • Balanced: processor performance is prioritized only when it's necessary for running more demanding tasks, such as playing games or videos. Avast Battery Saver adjusts processor performance according to your current needs.
      • Maximum performance: processor performance is always prioritized over power savings. Avast Battery Saver does not affect processor performance.
    • Put the PC to Sleep after: specify after what period of inactivity your PC enters Sleep mode. Sleep is a power-saving mode that moves open documents and programs to memory, while allowing you to quickly resume operation of your PC.
    • Turn hard disk off after: specify after what period of inactivity your hard disk turns off.
    • Hibernate the PC after: specify after what period of inactivity your PC enters Hibernation mode. Hibernation is a power-saving mode that moves your open documents and programs to the hard disk and turns off your PC.
    • Wireless Adapter Settings: determine system behavior when you are connected to a Wi-Fi network:
      • Maximum savings: prioritizes power savings by limiting your wireless adapter's communication with other devices. Although you will still be able to browse the internet and access cloud storage, web pages and online content may load slowly.
      • Balanced: adjusts your Wi-Fi connectivity based on current needs. System performance is prioritized when necessary, allowing you to quickly download files and access online content.
      • Maximum performance: system performance is always prioritized over power savings. Avast Battery Saver does not limit your Wi-Fi connectivity.
    • Wi-Fi connection: specify what happens to your Wi-Fi connection each time you enable Custom mode.
