For detailed instructions on how to start syncing Avast Secure Browser across your devices, refer to the following article:
How is my data protected when I sync Avast Secure Browser?
Avast uses end-to-end encryption, which encrypts your data locally on the device and remotely in the Avast data center. Encryption works by changing your data to random characters, ensuring that absolutely nobody (including Avast) can read your data except you.
You can only read encrypted data if you have access to the specified encryption key. You can choose the encryption key that protects your Avast Secure Browser data via your sync settings:
- Open Avast Secure Browser, then click the
Current user icon to the right of the address bar.
- Click
Settings (the gear icon).
- Scroll to Encryption options and select your preferred method:
- Encrypt synced data end-to-end with your Avast username and password: Your credentials are stored both locally on your device and remotely in the Avast data center. This means that you retain access to your encrypted data even if you need to change your Avast Account password. Your encryption key is stored in a protected vault in the Avast data center, which prevents Avast from accessing it.
- Encrypt synced data with your own sync passphrase: The passphrase is only stored locally on your device and is not stored remotely in the Avast data center. This means that if you forget your passphrase, Avast cannot reset it. You are prompted to enter your passphrase each time you add a new device to your sync group.
- Open Avast Secure Browser, then
Settings (the gear icon) at the top-right of the screen.
- Tap My Account.
- Under Sync, tap Sync Encryption. Then, select your preferred option:

- Error: This status may appear if you have set up a sync passphrase on one of the other devices in your sync group. To remove the Error status and continue syncing your data, you need to enter the passphrase on each of your synced devices. Click the Current user icon and select Enter passphrase. Enter the same passphrase that you set up on the other synced device, and click Submit.
