Email Guardian, available in Avast One and Avast Premium Security, scans your incoming emails when you check them using a web browser. Any malicious or phishing emails are marked with an 'Avast: Suspicious' label.
Set up Email Guardian
- Open Avast One, then select
Explore ▸ Email Guardian ▸ Open Email Guardian.
- Select the On the web tab.
- Select your type of email account. If you do not use Outlook, select Other.
Select the relevant option below for instructions to connect your email account:
Gmail
- Enter your Gmail address, then click Continue.
- Click the button to open Gmail, then sign in to your Gmail account.
Alternatively, click the button below to open Gmail, then sign in to your Gmail account.
Open Gmail - In the top-right, click Settings (the gear icon), then select See all settings.
- Select the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.
- In the IMAP access section, select Enable IMAP, then click Save Changes.
- Return to the Avast One screen and click Continue to follow the next steps to give Email Guardian access.
- Click the button to open your Google Account settings.
Alternatively, click the button below to open your Google Account settings.
Open Google Account settings - Ensure the Security tab is selected.
- In the Signing in to Google section, click App passwords.
- Enter your Gmail password and click Next to sign in to your Gmail account again.
- Click the Select app drop-down menu and select Other (Custom name). Then enter Email Guardian and click Generate.
- Use your mouse to highlight the password, then right-click and select Copy.
- Return to the Avast One screen and click Continue.
- Paste the copied password, then click Continue.
- Click Got it.
Outlook
- Enter your Outlook email address, then click Next.
- Enter your Outlook password, then click Sign in.
- If prompted to Let this app access your info?, click Yes to give Avast permission.
Email Guardian does not collect or store any of your emails. If it detects a malicious email, it only flags it within your mailbox. You can decide what to do with the email. For more information, see our Privacy Policy.

Configure your email account
For some email providers, you need to set up your email account to work with Email Guardian. If your email provider is listed in the table below, click the relevant link to follow the instructions on your email provider's support website. After setting up your email account to work with Email Guardian, follow the steps below to complete the process in Avast One.

If your email provider is not listed in the table above or you already set up your email account to work with Email Guardian, then continue with the steps below:
- On the Avast One screen, enter your email address, then click Continue. If you see the error message Sorry, we can't connect to that account yet, your email account is currently not compatible with Email Guardian. However, we are continuously adding supported email providers.
- Enter your password and click Continue. If you see an error message, click Try again. If setup fails again, click Close, and try again from the beginning using the exact steps in this article.
- Click Got it.
Your email is now set up for monitoring by Email Guardian.
- Open Avast Premium Security, then select Protection ▸ Email Guardian.
- Select your type of email account. If you do not use Outlook, select Other.

Gmail
- Enter your Gmail address, then click Continue.
- Click the button to open Gmail, then sign in to your Gmail account.

Open Gmail - In the top-right, click Settings (the gear icon), then select See all settings.

Remove an email account
To stop Email Guardian from monitoring an email account:
- Open Avast One, then select
Explore ▸ Email Guardian ▸ Open Email Guardian.
- Under Protected mailboxes, hover your cursor over the relevant email account and click the X icon.
- Click Yes, remove.
Your email is now removed from Email Guardian and is no longer monitored for malicious or phishing emails.
To stop Email Guardian from monitoring an email account:
- Open Avast Premium Security, then select Protection ▸ Email Guardian.
- Under Email accounts, hover your cursor over the relevant email account and click the X icon.
- Click Yes, remove.
