Avast Passwords for Mac - Getting started

This article describes configuration of Avast Passwords installed on macOS. If you want to configure Avast Passwords on Windows PC or mobile devices, read the following articles:

Set up Passwords

Before you start using Avast Passwords an initial configuration is needed:

  1. After installing and opening Avast Passwords, click Start now to start configuration.
  2. Create the Master Password that complies with the on-screen requirements and retype it. Then tick the box to acknowledge that we are unable to restore or reset your Master Password if you forget it. Confirm your changes by tapping Confirm password.
  3. Install the Passwords extension in your default browser.
  4. Enable the extension in your browser(s) by following the on-screen instructions.
  5. Click your browsers or other passwords managers icons to import your existing accounts and login data.

Passwords that are imported are not automatically deleted from your browsers. We recommend you manually delete all passwords from your browsers.

Manage accounts

Each time you log into an online account in your browser for the first time, the Passwords extension recognizes the new login attempt and offers to save the account details to Passwords.

Add account

Alternatively, you can add the details of an account manually on the Passwords screen by following these steps:

  1. Click Add +.
  2. Optionally select a color if the account is not recognized, then provide the following details:
    • Service name: a name that will allow you to easily find and recognize your account.
    • URL: the website address of the account, for example, https://www.example.com.
    • Username: the username (often an email address) that you use to log into the account.
    • Password: the password that you currently use to log into the account.
    • Note: any information related to this account.
    Click Save to confirm the data.

A tile representing your newly added account details appears on the main Passwords screen.

Edit account

To edit or delete a previously added account, follow these steps:

  1. Click an account tile to open the account contents.
  2. Select one of the following options:
    • Click Edit, then modify the existing account, and click Save changes to confirm your changes.
    • Click Delete to completely remove the account.

Manage notes

The Secure Notes section is a place where you can safely store notes in Passwords. All notes are encrypted and protected by your Master Password to ensure maximum security. This feature protects your confidential information from unauthorized access.

Add note

Add a new note by following these steps:

  1. Click the note icon on the left-side panel, then click Add +.
  2. Optionally select an icon for the note, then provide the following details:
    • Title: a title that will allow you to easily find and recognize your note.
    • Text: any data that you want to keep secure, such as PINs and contact details.
    Click Save to confirm the data.

A tile representing your newly added note appears on the main Passwords screen.

Edit note

To edit or delete a previously added note, follow these steps:

  1. Click a note tile to open the note contents.
  2. Select one of the following options:
    • Click Edit, then modify the existing note, and click Save changes to confirm your changes.
    • Click Delete to completely remove the note.

Notes cannot be restored once you delete them.

Import passwords

If you want to import your passwords from other browsers or password managers, follow these steps:

  1. Click Set synchronization and backup at the bottom of the Passwords window.
  2. Click a browser or another password manager icon to start importing your data.
  3. Follow the on-screen instruction to complete the process.

If you want to import your login details from another password manager (that is not visible in the Passwords window), you can import your data by using a CSV file. To import a CSV file to Passwords, click Avast Passwords in the left-top corner on your Mac screen and select Import / Export. Then click Import from CSV and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the import.

Use the Passwords browser extension

Once you have installed the Passwords extension onto your internet browser, a Avast Passwords (key) icon is visible in your browser. Click the key icon to access the following options:

  • On this website: adjust these options for the currently opened website.
    • Enable auto-fill: enables Passwords to fill in your login details automatically based on the account that are stored in your Passwords vault.
    • Ask to save passwords: if the Passwords does not contain your account for this website, you are offered to create it.
  • Generate a strong password: generates a safe password and allows you to copy it.
  • Lock vault: locks your Passwords vault.

Generate safe passwords

There are two methods to generate a safe password using Passwords:

  • By using the passwords generator in the Passwords app: click the password generator icon on the main screen of Passwords and set parameters for a safe passwords you want to generate. Once a safe password is created, you can copy it by clicking the Copy to clipboard icon.
  • By using the Passwords browser extension: once you have installed the Passwords extension onto your internet browser, click the key icon and select the Generate a strong password option. Then set parameters for a safe passwords you want to generate. Once a safe password is created, you can copy it by clicking the Copy icon.

Set up synchronization and backup

To make accessing your online accounts easier, synchronize the data stored in Passwords across all of your devices using your Avast Account. For more information read the following article:

Adjust Passwords settings

To manage your Passwords settings, click Set synchronization and backup at the bottom of the Passwords window.

The following options are available for Passwords:

  • Security: specify how often your Master Password is required.
  • Browser: install the Passwords browser extension in your browsers.
  • Sync & Backup: synchronize the data stored in Passwords across all of your devices.
  • General: check for updates and participate in beta testing.
  • Import: import your login details from your browsers and other password managers.
  • Avast Passwords 1.x
