This article applies to the standalone Avast SecureLine VPN app and the VPN feature included in Avast One.
Some email providers restrict connections from VPN servers for security, fraud-prevention, or regional-compliance reasons. As a result, you may be unable to send or receive email while connected to Avast SecureLine VPN or Avast One VPN. This article explains how to resolve such issues.
To resolve the issue, try the following solutions in order:
Change the VPN protocol
Changing the VPN protocol may help your email app connect successfully. Follow the steps for your device:
- Open the VPN settings using the steps for your app:
- Select Advanced Settings in the left panel.
- Under VPN Protocols, select a different available protocol.
- Reconnect to the VPN.
- Close and reopen the email app and then try to use it again.
- Open the VPN settings using the steps for your app:
- Select VPN in the left panel, then select the Advanced Settings tab.
- Under VPN Protocols, select a different available protocol.
- Reconnect to the VPN.
- Close and reopen the email app and then try to use it again.
- Open the VPN screen using the steps for your app:
- Standalone Avast SecureLine VPN: Open Avast SecureLine VPN.
- Avast One: Open Avast One, then tap Explore ▸ VPN.
- Tap Settings (the gear icon) in the top-right corner.
- Tap VPN Protocol Settings, then select a different available protocol.
- Reconnect to the VPN.
- Close and reopen the email app and then try to use it again.
- Open the VPN screen using the steps for your app:
- Standalone Avast SecureLine VPN: Open Avast SecureLine VPN.
- Avast One: Open Avast One, then tap Explore ▸ VPN.
- Tap Settings (the gear icon) in the top-right corner.
- Tap Advanced Settings, then select a different available protocol.
- Reconnect to the VPN.
- Close and reopen the email app and then try to use it again.
Connect to a different VPN location
Select a different nearby location. For example:
- If you are in the United States and your VPN is set to Fastest Location, manually select the United States.
- If you are in the United States and the VPN is already set to the United States, try Canada or Mexico.
- If you are in Germany and the VPN is already set to Germany, try Switzerland or France.
For detailed instructions, follow the steps for your device:
- Open the VPN screen using the steps for your app:
- Click the drop-down arrow beside the currently selected VPN location.
- Search for a specific server, or select one from the list. For countries that offer multiple cities, click the down arrow and select your preferred city.
- Close and reopen the email app and then try to use it again.

- Avast One: Open Avast One, then tap Explore ▸ VPN.
- Tap the current VPN location on the main VPN screen.
- Search for a specific server, or select one from the list. For countries that offer multiple cities, tap
••• (three dots) and select your preferred city. - Close and reopen the email app and then try to use it again.
- Open the VPN screen using the steps for your app:
- Standalone Avast SecureLine VPN: Open Avast SecureLine VPN.
- Avast One: Open Avast One, then tap Explore ▸ VPN.
- Tap the current VPN location on the main VPN screen.
- Search for a specific server, or select one from the list. For countries that offer multiple cities, tap
••• (three dots) and select your preferred city. - Close and reopen the email app and then try to use it again.
Exclude the email app using Split Tunneling
Split Tunneling allows the selected email app to connect directly to the internet instead of using the VPN connection. The rest of your traffic continues to use Avast SecureLine VPN.
Disconnect Avast SecureLine VPN before changing the Split Tunneling settings.
- Open the VPN settings using the steps for your app:
- Select Advanced Settings in the left panel.
- Enable Exclude apps from VPN.
- Click Edit Apps ▸ Add application.
- A new window appears. In this window, navigate to your email app's executable file, select it, then click Open.
- Click Save, then reconnect to the VPN.
- Close and reopen the email app and then try to use it again.
- Open the VPN screen using the steps for your app:
- Standalone Avast SecureLine VPN: Open Avast SecureLine VPN.
- Avast One: Open Avast One, then tap Explore ▸ VPN.
- Tap Settings (the gear icon) in the top-right corner.
- Tap Split Tunneling, then enable the feature.
- Select the email app that you want to exclude from the VPN connection.
- Click Save, then reconnect to the VPN.
- Close and reopen the email app and then try to use it again.
Split Tunneling is not available on Mac and iOS. If the issue persists after changing the VPN protocol and location, proceed to the section below.
