Controlling a lost or stolen Android device remotely using Anti-Theft in Avast Mobile Security

The Anti-Theft feature in Avast Mobile Security allows you to connect to your device if it is lost or stolen and execute several commands remotely from your Avast Account. You cannot control a missing device unless the following requirements are met:

  • The device is turned on and connected to the internet.
  • The Anti-Theft feature is enabled on the device.
  • The device is paired with an Avast Account.
It is not possible to pair your device with an Avast Account or enable Anti-Theft without access to the device.

Access the Anti-Theft feature in the Avast Account interface

To control a missing device remotely, follow the steps below on another device to access the Anti-Theft section of your Avast Account.

  1. Open https://my.avast.com/ in your web browser, enter your login credentials, then click Login.
  2. Click the Grid icon in the top-left corner, and select Anti-Theft.
  3. Select your missing device.
  4. Select your chosen command from:
    1. The command panel
    2. The command list

Command Panel

Refer to the relevant sections below for instructions to send Anti-Theft commands listed in the command panel:

The Locate command is the simplest and quickest way to locate your device using GPS. Avast Anti-Theft offers 2 tracking options:

  • Track Device: sends multiple commands to monitor your device's location changes. You can select how frequently you receive information about the location of your device.
  • Request Location: sends the command once to retrieve your device's current location.

Send the Locate command for the first time:

  1. Select Locate from the command panel.
  2. Select your preferred tracking option from the screen that appears.
  3. If you select Track Device, use the drop-down menu to specify how frequently you receive location updates, then click Save to send the command.
  4. Access location data received to your Avast Account via Notifications.

Send a subsequent Locate command:

  1. Select Locate from the command panel.
  2. A map loads automatically showing your device's last-known location. Click your preferred tracking option in the top-right corner to update the map with your device's latest location.
  3. If you select Track Device, use the drop-down menu to specify how frequently you receive location updates, then click Save to send the command.
  4. Click the table icon to open the GPS coordinates and review your device's location, latitude, longitude, and information about accuracy.

To disable the Locate command, click Locate in the command panel, then click Stop Tracking Device in the top-right corner of the map that appears.

Accuracy varies depending on signal strength and if the device is in range of a GPS signal.

Sending the Lost command marks your missing device as Lost. The following features are enabled by default and activate when you mark your device as Lost:

  • Lock device: makes your device inaccessible to intruders.
  • Sound siren: activates the siren on your device to alert you or others to its location.
  • Camera trap: captures a photo of the thief and records a 1-minute audio file to help you identify the thief.
  • Get data: exports your contact list from the device to your Avast Account.
  • Last known location: sends the last known location of your device when the battery is dying.
The Camera trap, Get data, and Last known location features are only available with a paid version of Avast Mobile Security.

To mark your device as Lost:

  1. Select Mark as Lost from the command panel.
  2. Ensure the Lost tab is selected, and click Send.
  3. Access the data received to your Avast Account via Notifications.

To disable the Lost command, enter your Avast PIN code on the found device. Alternatively, from your Avast Account, select Mark as LostFound, then click Send.

The Siren command triggers a loud siren on your missing device.

To send the Siren command:

  1. Select Siren from the command panel.
  2. Ensure the Siren on tab is selected, and click Send to trigger the siren sound on your lost or stolen device.

To disable the siren, enter your Avast PIN code on the found device. Alternatively, from your Avast Account, select SirenSiren off, then click Send.

The Lock command allows you to remotely lock your missing device so that it cannot be accessed without your Avast PIN.

To send the Lock command:

  1. Select Lock from the command panel.
  2. Ensure the Lock tab is selected, and click Send to lock your device.

To unlock your device, enter your Avast PIN code on the found device. Alternatively, from your Avast Account, select LockUnlock, then click Send.

Command List

Refer to the relevant sections below for instructions to send Anti-Theft commands listed in the command list:

Record audio, Take picture, and Get data are only available with a paid version of Avast Mobile Security.

The Wipe command erases all data on your device and initiates a factory reset.

There is no possibility to undo this action once the command is sent.

To send the Wipe command:

  1. Select Wipe from the command list.
  2. Click Send to clear all data from your device. Once the command is sent, your device will reboot.

The Record audio command utilizes the microphone on your device to perform an audio recording, which is sent to your Avast Account.

To send the Record audio command:

  1. Select Record audio from the command list.
  2. Use the drop-down menu to specify the Recording Duration. If you tick Use noise recognition, Anti-Theft listens to the device's surroundings for the time period specified in Maximum Noise Recognition Duration and automatically begins recording only when noise is detected.
  3. Click Send to enable Anti-Theft to start recording or listening to your device's surroundings.
  4. Access the data received to your Avast Account via Notifications.

The Take picture command allows you to take a photo using either the front or back camera of your device, which is then sent to your Avast Account.

To send the Take picture command:

  1. Select Take picture from the command list.
  2. Optionally, configure Anti-Theft to take the picture using the front camera, or to only take a picture when the device is next turned on. Click Send.
  3. Access the data received to your Avast Account via Notifications.

The Get data command allows you to export your device's contact list to your Avast Account.

To send the Get data command:

  1. Select Get data from the command list.
  2. Click Send to export your contact list.
  3. Access the data received to your Avast Account via Notifications.

Access data received to your Avast Account

When you send the Locate, Mark as lost, Record audio, Take picture, and Get data commands, your device sends data to the Notifications section of your Avast Account.

To access data received to your Avast Account:

  1. Select the relevant device in the left panel, and click Info.
  2. Select the Notifications tab.
  3. Under the Message section, select the icon next to the relevant notification to view or download data.
    1. An audio file was received: This file contains data initiated by the Mark as Lost and Record audio commands. To download the audio file, click the ↓ download icon. The file starts downloading automatically and saves to your Downloads folder by default.
    2. A position update was received: This file contains data initiated by the Mark as lost and Locate commands. To view location data, click the GPS pin icon. A map appears showing your device's location. Click the table icon to open the GPS coordinates and review your device's location, latitude, longitude, and information about accuracy. You can provide this information to the police if necessary.
    3. A picture was received: This file contains a photo initiated by the Mark as lost and Take picture commands. To download the photo, click the ↓ download icon. The file starts downloading automatically and saves to your Downloads folder by default.
    4. A list of your contacts, sms messages and calls was exported: This file contains data initiated by the Mark as lost and Get data commands. When you click the ↓ download icon, an HTML file containing your contacts opens in a new tab.
The notifications you receive may vary according to your version of Avast Mobile Security and your Anti-Theft settings.

Customize Lost command behavior

You can configure which features activate when your device is marked as Lost using either method below:

  • Avast Mobile Security: go to Menu (three lines) ▸ Anti-Theft and scroll down to the When device is marked as LOST section.
  • The Anti-Theft section of your Avast Account: select your device in the left panel, then go to SettingsAnti-TheftProtection Behavior.
  • Avast Anti-Theft for Android
  • Avast Mobile Security 6.x
  • Google Android 5.0 (Lollipop, API 21) or higher
