Avast Wi-Fi Finder for Android and iOS - Getting Started

Avast Wi-Fi Finder is a free mobile app for Android and iOS that provides you with access to a database of public Wi-Fi networks even when you are not connected to the internet. From the app, you can view information about the quality and security of Wi-Fi networks before you connect.

Refer to the sections in this article for instructions on using Avast Wi-Fi Finder for Android and iOS.

Navigate the Avast Wi-Fi Finder interface

  1. After installing Avast Wi-Fi Finder from Google Play Store, open the app by tapping the Avast Wi-Fi Finder icon on your device.
  2. When the app opens, use the Wi-Fi, Map, Offline, and Tools icons at the bottom of the page to switch between tabs and perform certain tasks.

  2. When the app opens, use the Available Wi-Fi, Map, Offline Mode, Secure Me and menu icons at the bottom of the page to switch between tabs and perform certain tasks.

Manage your Settings

Select the types of notifications that you want to receive, configure the app to save your mobile data, and automatically connect to known Wi-Fi networks:

  1. Tap Tools to open a list of settings and information.
  2. Tap Notifications to open your options for receiving Avast Wi-Fi Finder alerts.
  3. When you finish managing Notifications, tap the back arrow to return to the Tools tab.
  4. Tap Settings to open the following settings:
    • Easy Connect: turn ON to permit Avast Wi-Fi Finder to automatically connect you to familiar Wi-Fi networks when in range.
    • Force data saving: turn ON to only connect to Offline Wi-Fi network packs even if mobile data is active.
    • Become our valued Beta tester: tap to be directed to Google Play Store where you can sign up as a Beta tester for the app.
    • Legal and licensing: tap to see our End User License Agreement, Privacy Policy, and Open source libraries.

Your Avast Wi-Fi Finder settings preferences are set.

Check for Available Wi-Fi Networks

Open the Wi-Fi tab to see a list of nearby Wi-Fi networks. Verify the status, security, and speed of a network, then connect directly from the app:

  1. If you are not already on the Wi-Fi tab, tap Wi-Fi to see the following two categories of nearby Wi-Fi networks:
    • In range: Wi-Fi networks that are close enough to connect to from your location.
    • In walking distance: Wi-Fi networks that are within walking distance of your location.
    If you are currently connected to a Wi-Fi network, the name of the network appears at the top of the page.
  2. Tap the downward facing arrow next to In range or In walking distance to open the list of Wi-Fi networks in that category.
  3. Tap a Wi-Fi network from the list to see the status, and, if not already close enough to connect to, the walking distance to the network, as well as a range of actions that you can perform.
  4. Tap the action that you want to perform:

    In range
    •   Connect: to connect to the network.
    •    Share Wi-Fi: to connect to the network and make it available to other Avast Wi-Fi Finder users.
    •   Network detail: to verify or test the speed and security, and see the number of successful connections.
    •   Forget network: to disconnect from and forget the details of a connected network.
    •   Report problem: to report that the location of the network is incorrect or the network does not exist (only available for networks that are part of the Avast Wi-Fi Finder database).
    Within walking distance
    •   Navigate to Wi-Fi: to open directions to the network in Google Maps.
    •   Show on map: to see the location of the network on the Avast Wi-Fi Finder map.
    •   Network detail: to verify or test the speed and security, and see the number of successful connections.
    •   Report problem: to report that the location of the network is incorrect or the network does not exist.

Alternatively, tap Smart Connect at the top of the Wi-Fi tab to connect directly to the fastest and most secure available Wi-Fi network.

You can easily find available Wi-Fi networks and verify the security, speed, and rating of a connection, before you connect.

  1. Tap the Available Wi-Fi to open a list of available Wi-Fi networks including the Wi-Fi network you are connected to (if applicable), and any Wi-Fi networks that are within range or walking distance from your location.
  2. Tap a Wi-Fi network from the list to view the connection requirements, security, speed, and user rating (if available).
  3. Perform an action depending on whether the Wi-Fi network is connected, nearby, or walking distance from your location:
    • Connected: open your internet browser by tapping Start browsing.
    • Networks Nearby: connect to the Wi-Fi network by following these steps.
    • Walking Distance: follow map-assisted directions by tapping Navigate to open the Maps app on your device.

Locate Wi-Fi networks using the Map

View available Wi-Fi networks and verify their proximity to you on the Map tab. You can also check a Wi-Fi network's security, speed, status, and number of successful connections before you connect. Additionally, open Google Maps for directions to networks that are not already within range:

  1. Tap Map to open a map of nearby Wi-Fi networks.
  2. Tap a Wi-Fi network on the map to display the name and status of that network.
  3. Tap one of the following options:
    • Navigate: to open directions to the network in Google Maps.
    • Details: to see the security, speed, and number of successful connections, if available.

When a Wi-Fi network is within range, you can connect to it directly from the app.

To see the location of available Wi-Fi networks in relation to you, open the Avast Wi-Fi Finder Map.

  1. Tap the Map icon to open the Avast Wi-Fi Finder map.
    To change to 3D view, tap the 3D icon at the top-right of the page. To recenter your position on the map, tap the Recenter icon at the top-left of the page.
  2. Tap a Wi-Fi network on the map to display the name and connection requirements at the bottom of the page.
  3. Drag the network information box up to see the security, speed, and rating of the network (if available).
  4. Perform an action depending on whether the Wi-Fi network is connected, nearby, or walking distance from your location:
    • Connected: open your internet browser by tapping Start browsing.
    • Networks Nearby: connect to the Wi-Fi network by following these steps.
    • Walking Distance: follow map-assisted directions by tapping Navigate to open the Apple Maps on your device.

To return to the Map section and select a different Wi-Fi network, tap the Exit icon at the top-left of the page.

Connect to a Wi-Fi Network

You can only connect to Wi-Fi networks that are part of the Avast Wi-Fi Finder database from your device settings. If Avast Wi-Fi Finder already knows the password, you can connect without providing a password.

  1. Open Settings on your iOS device.
  2. Tap the Wi-Fi option to open a list of the Wi-Fi networks that are within range.
    Wi-Fi networks that are part of the Avast Wi-Fi Finder database are labelled with the sub-text Avast Wi-Fi Finder.
  3. Tap the name of the Wi-Fi network that you want to connect to, and:
    • If Avast Wi-Fi Finder already knows the password, you are connected to the Wi-Fi network automatically without needing to provide the password.
    • If Avast Wi-Fi Finder does not know the password, you are prompted to type the password before you are connected to the Wi-Fi network.

Download Offline Wi-Fi Network Packs

Download Wi-Fi network packs for a selection of countries so that you can find and connect to them even when you are offline

  1. Tap Offline to open a list of available Wi-Fi network packs.
  2. Find the location where you want offline access to Wi-Fi networks by scrolling through the list or using the search box, then tap the name of the location to select it.
  3. Tap Download. Avast Wi-Fi Finder notifies you when the download is complete. Downloaded network packs appear at the top of the list of Offline Wi-Fi network packs under the sub-heading Downloaded.

After you have downloaded a Wi-Fi network pack, you can access the Wi-Fi networks in the pack from the Available Wi-Fi or Map tabs of the app even while you are not connected to the internet.

Download Wi-Fi network packs for a selection of countries for offline access.

  1. Tap the Offline Mode icon to open a list of available Wi-Fi network packs.
  2. Tap the name of a Wi-Fi network pack that you want to download to see the number of Wi-Fi networks in the pack, and the amount of data the network pack will occupy on your device if you download it.
  3. Tap Download to download the Wi-Fi network pack. When the download is complete, the downloaded network pack appears at the top of your list of Offline Mode network packs under the sub-heading Downloaded.

After you have downloaded a Wi-Fi network pack, you can find the Wi-Fi networks included in the pack from the Available Wi-Fi or Map sections even while you are not connected to the internet.

Connect using Avast SecureLine VPN

Encrypt your connection using Avast SecureLine VPN to protect your online activity from eavesdropping:

  1. Tap the Secure Me icon.
  2. If Avast SecureLine VPN is:
    • Not installed on your iOS device, tap the Get SecureLine button to download and install the Avast SecureLine VPN app from App Store.
    • Installed, and your iOS device is connected to a Wi-Fi network, tap the Start SecureLine button to open and start using the Avast SecureLine VPN app.
