Preventing a BSOD when installing the Windows 10 Anniversary Update

An incompatibility issue with one of Avast Antivirus drivers can repeatedly cause a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) error when installing the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. To avoid this issue, we recommend you repair your installation of Avast Antivirus (or update if you are not already using the latest version) before applying the Windows update. An emergency update was released to our user base to prevent and fix this BSOD issue. All new installations should be fixed automatically (except when you install Avast Antivirus offline).


To avoid the BSOD issues, follow these steps:

A BSOD error may happen to anyone who installs the Windows 10 Anniversary Update on a PC with Avast Antivirus and Intel Skylake CPUs with Intel® Virtualization Technology (Intel VT) enabled in the BIOS. Another incompatible software program or hardware device may also cause the BSOD error.

Avast released an emergency patch within 48 hours of the first reports of the issue. It is now safe to perform a clean installation on PCs using the online installer on Intel VT enabled Skylake CPUs running the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.
