What is Avast Omni?

Avast Omni is a powerful online security solution that offers three dimensions of comprehensive protection, including:

  1. Home network security for all of the IoT connected devices in your home.
  2. On-device security for Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS devices.
  3. Parental controls that allow you to manage the online content your children can access, pause and set internet time limits, and check their location using a GPS locator.

With Avast Omni, you can keep your family's connected world fully protected.

What is IoT?

IoT (Internet of Things) refers to the increasing number of smart devices that are connected to the internet and can connect, collect, and exchange data. This includes devices such as smart TVs, thermostats, speakers, webcams, media streamers, home appliances, baby monitors and vehicles. Embedded with technology, these devices can communicate and interact over the internet, and they can be remotely monitored and controlled.

What are the security risks of IoT devices?

IoT devices are essentially a digital doorway into your and your family's personal data. Without proper protection, the sensitive information (home address, phone number, passwords, credit card information, social media account log-ins, etc.) stored on these devices could become accessible to hackers, since many of these devices do not have security designed into them, making them vulnerable. Hackers could also invade your home directly via an IoT hack, for example, by taking control of your security (IP) camera and spying on you.

Does Avast Omni replace my current router?

No. The Avast Omni hub is a hardware component dedicated to protecting your network, that you plug into your router through a provided ethernet cable.

Can I use Avast Omni for my network security even if I don’t use Avast Antivirus on my devices at all?

Yes, you can use Avast Omni to manage your network security without using Avast Antivirus on your Windows, Mac, Android, or iOS devices. However, you will need the Avast Omni Family Guardian app installed on a Windows device in order to manage your network security and protect the IoT devices in your home.

How does Avast Omni’s threat protection differ from the protection in Avast Antivirus?

Avast Omni's network level protection guards your IoT devices, protecting them from botnets and specific IoT hacking attempts. On-device security (such as Avast Antivirus on your PC) cannot be installed on IoT devices because they are not sophisticated enough to run it. For this reason, network level security is necessary to protect everything connected to your Wi-Fi network.

Is the functionality of Avast Omni reduced if I don't use Avast Free Antivirus on my devices?

You need at least one Windows device to have Avast Omni installed so that you can set up the home network security. We recommend using Avast Antivirus software on your phones, tablets, and laptops as there are ongoing security risks for these devices that do not originate from the home network level. Therefore, we highly recommend downloading the Avast Omni app on all your devices to keep them safe everywhere.

Features

What features does Avast Omni include?

Avast Omni uses AI and real-time threat detection to protect your home network and all of the devices connected to it against privacy data leakage, malware threats, and device hijacking. The Avast Omni hub connects directly to your router and is managed through the Avast Omni app, which will alert you when a potential threat is detected so that malicious attacks can be shut down before any harm is done.

The Avast Omni app also protects your computers, tablets, and mobiles with our most powerful on-device security software, ensuring that your devices are completely secured against malware and other online threats.

Finally, the Avast Omni Family Guardian app includes parental controls so you can protect your children and help them develop healthy online habits. You can block offensive or inappropriate content or apps, set internet downtime, pause the internet temporarily, use geo-location services to check your child’s location, and receive alerts when they leave or arrive at specific places (home, school, etc).

How do the parental controls and family safety features work?

In the Avast Omni Family Guardian app, a user profile is created for each person in your household and the devices they use are connected to their profile. Each user profile is tagged as either the administrator (Family Guardian), adult, or child. The administrator uses the Avast Omni Family Guardian app to set and control various settings on the other devices connected to the household. The following parental control features are available for child profiles:

  • Geo-location tracking: view the location of your child’s primary device and receive location alerts so you can check that your child is safe at all times.
  • Content filters: set parameters for a user to block all offensive or inappropriate websites and apps.
  • Disable internet: temporarily pause internet access for a user, either on demand or for scheduled times.

How does Avast Omni protect my devices?

Avast Omni gives you three levels of protection for your home and family: home network protection, on-device security, and parental controls. The Avast Omni hub provides protection at the network level (via hardware that connects to your router), while the Avast Omni Family Member app provides our most powerful security software for on-device protection on your Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS devices. The Avast Omni Family Guardian app also gives you access to parental controls, so you can protect your children both online and off.

Avast Omni uses artificial intelligence to learn how to detect unusual behavior in your home network and immediately notify you of any malicious activity. By continuously learning the behavior of new devices and processing big data in real-time, Avast Omni provides you with world-class security, privacy, and family protection features.

Can I get logs of what threats were blocked and for which devices?

Yes, you can see information like this in the Avast Omni Family Guardian app, in the notifications section.

Can the parental controls block categories of sites (i.e., NSFW, adult, etc) or is it manually configured?

Yes, you can block either whole categories (for example, objectionable, social media, games), or single web pages. For more information about the parental control features, refer to the following article:

Order and delivery

How can I order Avast Omni?

Avast Omni is currently only offered to our US-based customers. Before ordering, we strongly recommend checking your router compatibility. If your router model is not compatible, we cannot guarantee Avast Omni will work with your home network.

You can check your router compatibility using the Avast Omni trial for Windows or by following the on-screen instructions in your existing Avast Antivirus after clicking on the Avast Omni offer banner. If compatible, continue to follow the on-screen instructions to order Avast Omni.

When you order Avast Omni via your existing Avast Antivirus, or download the Avast Omni trial, any Avast Antivirus you already have installed will be automatically upgraded to Avast Omni.

What happens after I order Avast Omni?

After ordering, you will receive an order confirmation email and in the Avast Omni app you can view the expected shipping date for your Avast Omni hub. While we’re getting your Avast Omni hub sent out to you, you can start setting up user profiles in the Avast Omni app for the people in your household who connect to your Wi-Fi. When will I get my Avast Omni hub?

Shipping typically takes 5-7 days, but it can take up to 2 weeks for your Avast Omni hub to arrive. You can track the delivery status using the tracking number in the shipping confirmation email we send you.

Is shipping free?

Yes, shipping is free. There is no additional charge for shipping to US-based customers.

We cannot ship Avast Omni to customers outside of the United States.

Can I cancel my order before shipping?

When you order Avast Omni, you receive a confirmation email. This email contains instructions for canceling your order if you change your mind. You can cancel your order at any time up until the Avast Omni hub is ready to be shipped to you.

What if I don't want Avast Omni anymore? How do I get rid of the device?

If you decide you no longer want Avast Omni, just cancel your subscription. You can put the Avast Omni hub in your local recycling bank for electrical goods.

System requirements and setup

What do I need to set up Avast Omni?

In addition to the Avast Omni hub that is shipped to you after purchase, you will need:

  • An available LAN (ethernet) port on your network router to connect to the Avast Omni hub. An ethernet cable is provided with the Avast Omni hub.
  • A nearby electrical outlet to connect the Avast Omni hub to your household electricity (AC power supply). A power adapter is provided with the Avast Omni hub.
  • An Avast Account.
  • The Avast Omni Family Guardian app installed on a Windows device. The app is automatically downloaded when you order Avast Omni from the trial app or your existing Avast Antivirus.

Does Avast Omni come with all the cables I need to connect it to my router?

Yes, the Avast Omni hub comes with a power adapter and an ethernet cable. You do not need any other cables to connect Avast Omni to your router.

What if I do not have an open LAN (ethernet) port?

If you do not have an available LAN (ethernet) port on your router, first check to ensure all ports are really in use. If all ports are in use then you can purchase a switch to extend the number of ports on your router. Without an available LAN (ethernet) port on your router, Avast Omni will not be able to connect to your network configuration.

What if my router is not compatible?

If your router isn’t compatible, you will not be able to use Avast Omni at the moment. However, we are constantly improving the compatibility and expanding the number of supported routers. We would appreciate if you shared your router model with us on our dedicated Avast Omni forum so that we can prioritize the ones our customers have.

If I don't have a router, can I connect Avast Omni directly to my PC, Mac, or printer?

No. Avast Omni must be connected via ethernet cable to your router to ensure functionality. Without a direct connection to your router, Avast Omni can’t protect your home network.

Can I connect Avast Omni wirelessly?

No, you can only connect the Avast Omni hub to your router using an ethernet cable. An ethernet cable is provided with the Avast Omni hub.

What if my Avast Omni hub cannot connect to my router?

If your Avast Omni hub cannot connect to your router it is likely that something has gone wrong with the setup. Refer to the following article for help resolving the issue:

Which network topologies (the way a network is set up) are compatible with Avast Omni?

Supported network topologies:

  1. Simple
    • No other routing nodes apart from the main gateway device (ISP cable/dsl/fiber modem or router).
    • Optionally, switching nodes can be present (hubs, switches or routers set to bridge mode).
  2. Sub-setup
    • The only device connected to the main gateway is another router (can be a mesh router).
    • Everything else happens inside the sub-router "bubble".
    • The bubble is subject to the same rules as the simple setup—no other routing nodes besides mesh satellites.
    • Note: Issues may arise when devices connect to the main gateway directly (Wi-Fi not disabled etc.).
  3. Range extenders (except universal mode)
    • Some devices are connected to the network via a range extender set to either WDS (preferably) or proxy mode (Note: universal mode is not supported).
    • Avast Omni will work, but minor issues may arise, such as devices roaming between the extender and the main network being duplicated, or diminished device identification quality.
 

Unsupported network topologies:

  1. NAT, Avast Omni inside
    • The network contains an additional router which is left in its default configuration (not in bridge mode, NAT enabled).
    • Avast Omni is connected to this secondary router.
    • There are devices that connect to the main router directly.
    • Issues: Devices outside this router's sub-network will not be visible to, or protected by, Avast Omni.
  2. NAT, Avast Omni outside
    • The network contains an additional router which is left in its default configuration (not in bridge mode, NAT enabled).
    • Avast Omni is connected to the main router.
    • Issues: Devices inside the secondary router's sub-network will not be distinguishable and individually protected by Avast Omni.
  3. Mesh NAT, Avast Omni inside
    • The network contains an additional mesh router setup which is left in its default configuration (not in bridge mode, NAT enabled).
    • There are devices that connect to the main router directly.
    • Avast Omni is connected to this secondary (mesh) router.
    • Issues: Devices outside the mesh sub-network will not be visible to, or protected by, Avast Omni.
  4. Mesh NAT, Avast Omni outside
    • The network contains an additional mesh router setup which is left in its default configuration (not in bridge mode, NAT enabled).
    • Avast Omni is connected to the main router.
    • Issues: Devices inside the mesh sub-network will not be distinguishable and individually protected by Avast Omni.
  5. Range extenders (universal mode)
    • Some devices connected to the network via a range extender set to universal mode.
    • Issues: Devices that connect to the extender will not be distinguishable and individually protected by Avast Omni.

Subscription and activation

Do I need an Avast Antivirus subscription to use Avast Omni?

No. Avast Omni is a comprehensive solution that covers the hardware (Avast Omni hub, the part that plugs into your Wi-Fi router), as well as the software 1-year subscription that includes our Avast Premium Security antivirus protection.

Does Avast Omni require a subscription of its own?

When you purchase Avast Omni, it includes a 1-year subscription for the product.

How many devices does my Avast Omni subscription cover?

Your Avast Omni subscription includes on-device security through the Avast Omni app for up to 50 computers, phones, or tablets. Additionally, the Avast Omni hub protects all the IoT devices that are connected to your home Wi-Fi network. You can check which devices are connected to your home Wi-Fi network via the Avast Omni Family Guardian app.

What if I only have 1 or 2 IoT devices, can I get a cheaper subscription?

Avast Omni is a single price subscription because it scales with your connected home. There is no need to do anything if you are adding new devices to your network; you simply connect them. This makes it effortless to facilitate all the family devices and also trusted visitors to your home.

Can I try Avast Omni before purchasing it?

You can download the Avast Omni trial for Windows to check your router compatibility before purchasing the product. This trial app also includes Avast Premium security for 90 days. Once your trial ends, you can choose to purchase Avast Omni or switch back to your previous antivirus.

When you download the Avast Omni trial app, any Avast Antivirus you already have installed will be automatically upgraded to the Avast Omni trial.

I'm already an Avast customer, do I have to pay again to get Avast Omni or will my existing subscription be refunded?

Existing customers who upgrade their subscription, only pay any difference in price between their current Avast subscription and the subscription price of Avast Omni.

How do I activate my subscription?

When you set up Avast Omni, you are prompted to log into your Avast Account. After logging in, your Avast Omni subscription will automatically activate if you used the same email address to purchase Avast Omni and to log into your Avast Account. If you used different email addresses, you are prompted to activate your subscription manually using an activation code. Your activation code is located in your Avast Omni order confirmation email. Will Avast Omni slow down my internet?

Avast Omni does not slow down your network performance, however, when internet speeds exceed 400Mbps, you may notice an impact on the performance of your router.

What is the power consumption of Avast Omni?

The average power consumption of the Avast Omni hub is less than 5 Watts.

How big is the Avast Omni hub?

The Avast Omni hub is a small cylindrical disc approximately 0.87 inches high and with a diameter of 3.54 inches.

What licensing is the Avast Omni Firmware/Software under?

Can I use Avast Omni outside of the US?

Avast Omni is only certified for operation in the United States, Canada, European Union, Australia, and New Zealand. Although the Omni hub supports different power ratings (100-240 V, 50-60 Hz), we do not recommend using Avast Omni outside of the United States, Canada, European Union, Australia or New Zealand as we cannot guarantee that Avast Omni complies with the regulatory requirements of any other country, or that you can legally use it in any other country.

What information and data does Avast Omni gather from my network, and where does it go?

We only collect data that helps protect our users. This data is anonymized and stored within our secure infrastructure. It is never sold to a third party.

Does Avast Omni examine all the traffic/packets from my network devices? How does it actually work?

Avast Omni uses machine learning to assess the traffic on your home network and learn how the devices connected to your home network are communicating. Based on this information, we determine what is normal communication between your devices and what is suspicious or unusual, allowing us to warn you if any malicious activity is detected.

What is the difference between the Avast Omni Family Guardian app and the Avast Omni Family Member app?

The Avast Omni Family Guardian app is used to set up and manage your home network. It is automatically downloaded onto your Windows device when you order Avast Omni.

The Avast Omni Family Member app provides on-device antivirus and malware protection, and enables Avast Omni to track the location of the device and perform other parental control features. The Avast Omni Family Member app should be installed on all computers, mobiles, and tablets, that connect to your home network.

What is the difference between an Adult user profile and a Child user profile?

The main difference between Adult and Child profiles is the parental control features that are available for Child profiles. These include, geo-location tracking, content filtering, and internet blocking. To learn more about these features, refer to the following article:

Do I need to download the Avast Omni app on all my devices?

We recommend installing the Avast Omni Family Member app on all devices connected to your home network. If you don't do this, you won't benefit from all the Avast Omni features, such as on-the-go protection, geo-location tracking, and parental controls. Can I create user profiles while I wait for my Avast Omni hub to arrive?

How do I create a user profile?

User profiles are set up in the Avast Omni Family Guardian app. Follow the relevant instructions below or refer to the following article:

  1. Open the Avast Omni Family Guardian app and ensure Your Home is selected.
  2. Click New member.
  3. Select Adult or Child.
  4. Enter the name of the person and click Save.

How do I change the name or photo on a user profile?

Changes to a user profile can be made via the Avast Omni Family Guardian app. To change the name or photo on a user profile, follow the relevant instructions below:

  1. Open the Avast Omni Family Guardian app and ensure Your Home is selected.
  2. Click a user profile to view its details.
  3. Click (three dots) below the user name.
  4. Select Edit profile.
  5. Click Browse to edit the photo. Select an image from your device and click Open.
  6. Click in the name text box to edit the user name.
  7. When you have finished editing the user profile, click Save Changes.

How can I delete a user profile?

User profiles are deleted via the Avast Omni Family Guardian app. If Avast Omni hasn't been installed on the user's device, follow the instructions below to remove a user profile from your home network. If the Avast Omni Family Guardian app has been installed on the user's device, you need to unpair the device before removing it from your home network.

To delete a user profile:

  1. Open the Avast Omni Family Guardian app and ensure Your Home is selected.
  2. Click a user profile to view its details.
  3. Click (three dots) below the user name, then select Remove profile.
  4. Click Remove to confirm.

How do I unpair a device?

If you have installed the Avast Omni Family Member app on a device, you must unpair the device before deleting the user profile. If you do not unpair the device, you will not be able to uninstall the Avast Omni Family Member app.

  1. Open the Avast Omni Family Guardian app and select the Family icon at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Select the user profile you want to unpair.
  3. Tap the device details, then tap Avast Omni.
  4. Tap Unpair.
  5. Tap Unpair again to confirm.

Where can I find an unpairing code?

If you want to uninstall the Avast Omni Family Member app from a device, you need to unpair it first using the Avast Omni Family Guardian app. If you try to uninstall the Avast Omni Family Member app, you are prompted to enter an unpairing code. To locate the unpairing code, follow the instructions below:

  1. Open the Avast Omni Family Guardian app and select the Family icon at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Select the user profile you want to edit.
  3. Tap the device details, then tap Avast Omni.
  4. Tap Unpair. An unpairing code is displayed on the screen.
  5. Enter the unpairing code on the device you want to uninstall.
  1. Open the Avast Omni Family Guardian app and select the Family icon at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Select the user profile you want to edit.
  3. Tap the device details, then tap Avast Omni.
  4. Tap Unpair. An unpairing code is displayed on the screen.

The device is unpaired and you can now uninstall Avast Omni from the device.

How do I add a device to my household device list?

Household devices can be added via the Avast Omni Family Guardian app. When Avast Omni detects a device connected to your home network, the device details appear in the connected devices list. Follow the instructions below to add a device to your household:

  1. Open the Avast Omni Family Guardian app and ensure Your Home is selected.
  2. Click Household.
  3. Click Add a new device.
  4. Click the check box next to the device you want to add, then click Save.

What if Avast Omni can't find one of my devices?

If Avast Omni hasn't detected one of your devices, you can manually add the device to a user profile by following the steps below:

  1. Open the Avast Omni Family Guardian app and ensure Your Home is selected.
  2. Click a user profile to view its details.
  3. Click Add a new device.
  4. Enter a name for the device, then click Next.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to install Avast Omni on the newly added device.

What should I do if an unknown device appears on my device list?

When a new device connects to your home network, Avast Omni sends an alert notification to the Avast Omni Family Guardian app and you are prompted to assign the device to a user profile. If you do not recognize the device, you can block it from connecting to your home network. Follow the instructions below to manage unknown devices on your network:

  1. Click Choose Owner on the pop-up notification, or alternatively, go to the main Avast Omni Family Guardian app screen and click Whose devices are these?, then select the device name to view its details.
  2. Choose from the following options:
    • Block the device from accessing your network: Click BlockBlock Device.
    • Remove the device from your devices list: Click (three dots), then select Remove.
    • Assign the device to a user profile: Click Choose Owner, then select a user profile from the drop-down list.
  1. Tap Online Devices on the Home screen of your Avast Omni Family Guardian app.
  2. Select the device name to view its details.
  3. Choose from the following options:
    • Block the device from accessing your network: Tap (three dots), then select Block device, and tap Yes to confirm.

How can I check the battery status of my child's device?

Paired child devices report their battery status to the Avast Omni Family Guardian app. This is indicated on the child profile details screen by a colored icon next to the device name:

  • Green: there is more than 20% battery life on the device.
  • Red: there is less than 20% battery life on the device.
  • Gray: the device is inactive.

How do I log out of Avast Omni?

If you log out of the Avast Omni Family Guardian app, you will no longer be able to use that device to manage your Avast Omni home network and the app will revert to Avast Free Antivirus.

  1. Click ☰ MenuLog Out.
  2. Click Yes, Log Out to confirm.

  2. Tap Log Out of OmniLog Out.

You may be prompted to restart your device after logging out of Avast Omni.

Location tracking

What location features are available?

In the Avast Omni Family Guardian app you can check the location of a user's main device and view a log of previous locations. You can also set up two kinds of location alerts to get updates about a user's location:

  • Arrival/Departure Alerts: receive a notification when the user arrives and/or departs from a specified location.
  • Scheduled Alerts: specify a day and time when you are notified of the user's location.
The Avast Omni Family Member app must be installed and location permissions granted on the user's main device for location alerts to work.

Can I change who can view a user's location?

No. A user's location is only visible in the Avast Omni Family Guardian app.

How do I track the location of a device?

The location of devices that are linked with a user profile and have location tracking permission enabled can be tracked via the Avast Omni Family Guardian app.

  1. Open the Avast Omni Family Guardian app and ensure Your Home is selected.
  2. Click a user profile to view its details.
  3. In the top-right corner a map indicates the last recorded location for the tracked device.

What is content filtering?

Content filters are one of the parental control features that enable you to restrict what your child can access online. With content filtering you can block specific online content such as apps, games, downloads, videos, and websites. Content filters are divided into the following categories and sub-categories:

  • Objectionable: violence; drugs, alcohol and gambling; pornography; sexual content; nudity; hate and racism; self-harm; gore; hacking and cheating.
  • Social media: Instagram; Facebook and Messenger; Snapchat; Twitter; Tumblr; TikTok; Pinterest; Whisper; After School; ASKfm; Wishbone.
  • Messaging: Messages (Android); Kik; Line; Viber; GroupMe.
  • Games: Grand Theft Auto; Minecraft; Fortnite; Power Rangers: Legacy Wars; Chicken Scream; Pokemon Go; Face Swap; Candy Crush; Clash of Clans; Temple Run; Angry Birds; Fruit Ninja; Super Mario Run; Ballz; Color Switch; 8 Ball Pool; Roblox.
  • Downloads: Google Play Store.
  • Videos: YouTube; Vimeo; Hulu; Vevo; Netflix; Amazon and Prime Video; Crackle; Sling TV; Vudu; FiOS Mobile; Twitch.
  • Malware: Block sites that contain or promote active malware, spyware, or adware.
  • Other: Entertainment; Sports; Music; News; Search engines; Shopping.
  • Websites: Add a website URL and specify if it is blocked or trusted.

Will my child be alerted if they try to access blocked content?

Yes. If your child tries to access blocked content, their device shows a screen indicating that the content they are trying to view is blocked.

Internet blocking

How can I pause the internet for a user profile?

In the Avast Omni Family Guardian app you can set specific times when the internet is blocked for a user. To learn more about how to set up this Downtime feature, refer to the following article:

Avast Omni also allows you to temporarily turn off internet access for a user. To pause the internet for a user in your home network, follow the instructions below:

  1. Open the Avast Omni Family Guardian app and ensure Your Home is selected.
  2. Click a user profile to view its details.
  3. Click Pause Internet.

How can I block or unblock the internet for a device?

The Avast Omni Family Gaurdian app allows you to block individual devices from accessing the internet and connecting to your home network. To block a device, follow the instructions below:

  1. Open the Avast Omni Family Guardian app and ensure Your Home is selected.
  2. Click Online devices.
  3. Select the device you want to block.
  4. Click BlockBlock Device.

  4. Tap Block device.
  5. Tap Yes to confirm.
