Avast Wi-Fi Finder is a free mobile app for Android and iOS that provides you with access to a database of public Wi-Fi networks even when you are not connected to the internet. From the app, you can view information about the quality and security of Wi-Fi networks before you connect.

This article answers common questions related to the features, settings and general use of Avast Wi-Fi Finder for Android and iOS.

What are the system requirements for Avast Wi-Fi Finder?

You can install and run Avast Wi-Fi Finder on any device running operating systems Google Android 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich, API 15) or higher.

The system settings of certain device types may also affect the operation of Avast Wi-Fi Finder, and if you are using a custom ROM, the app may not work as expected. Please report any feedback regarding this issue through our support pages.

You can install and run Avast Wi-Fi Finder on any Apple iPhone, Apple iPod Touch, or Apple iPad running Apple iOS 9 and higher.

Avast Wi-Fi Finder is not supported and cannot be installed or run on Symbian, Microsoft Windows Phone/Mobile, Bada, WebOS, or any mobile operating system other than Android and iOS.

How can I download and install Avast Wi-Fi Finder?

Avast Wi-Fi Finder for Android devices is available for download from the Google Play Store.

  1. Open Google Play Store from the apps screen on your Android device and search for Avast Wi-Fi Finder.
  2. Open the Avast Wi-Fi Finder page from the search results.
  3. Tap Install, and if asked for permissions, select Accept.
  4. Once the installation is complete, tap Open to start using the app.
  5. Select Continue to confirm that you have read and accept the terms of the AVAST End User License Agreement and Privacy Policy.

Avast Wi-Fi Finder for iOS devices is available for download from the App Store.

  1. Open App Store from the apps screen of your iOS device and search for Avast Wi-Fi Finder.
  2. Open the Avast Wi-Fi Finder page from the search results.
  3. Tap Get to download the app, and then tap Install. When re-installing the app, just tap the cloud icon.
  4. If asked for permissions, select Accept.
  5. Once the installation is complete, tap Open to start using the app.
  6. Select Continue to confirm that you have read and accept the terms of the AVAST End User License Agreement and Privacy Policy.

Avast Wi-Fi Finder is now installed and ready to use. The app is only available in a free version so you do not need a license to activate it.

How can I uninstall Avast Wi-Fi Finder?

To remove Avast Wi-Fi Finder from your Android device:

  1. Open Settings from the main screen of your Android device.
  2. Select the Apps, then Avast Wi-Fi Finder.
  3. In the Storage section, tap Clear data and Clear cache.
  4. Then select Uninstall and then tap OK to confirm.

Avast Wi-Fi Finder is no longer installed on your device.

These steps can differ slightly depending on your device mode, Android version and vendor customizations.

To remove Avast Wi-Fi Finder from your iOS device:

  1. Press and hold the Avast Wi-Fi Finder icon on the main screen of your device for a while.
  2. Tap the small x which appears in the upper-left corner of the icon.
  3. Select Delete to confirm that you want to remove the app from your device.

Avast Wi-Fi Finder is no longer installed on your device.

Features and Settings

How can I find available Wi-Fi Networks using Avast Wi-Fi Finder?

On the Wi-Fi tab in Avast Wi-Fi Finder, you can see two categories of Wi-Fi networks:

  • In range: close enough to connect to from your current location.
  • In walking distance: close enough to walk to.

Tap one of the categories to see a list of associated Wi-Fi networks, then tap the name of a Wi-Fi network for more information about the connection. You can connect to the network if it is within range or access map-assisted directions if it is within walking distance.

Alternatively, tap the Smart Connect button at the top of the main screen of the Wi-Fi tab to connect directly to the fastest and most secure available Wi-Fi network. You can also check for Wi-Fi networks on the Map tab of the app.

Each time that you open Avast Wi-Fi Finder on your device, the app displays a list of Available Wi-Fi networks, including the Wi-Fi network that you are connected to, if applicable, and the Wi-Fi networks that are within range or walking distance from your location.

You can tap the name of a Wi-Fi network to see the security, speed, rating, and estimated walking distance from your location. You can also see whether a password is needed to connect to the network, and whether the password is available or not.

How does the Map feature work?

The Map tab of the app displays a map of Wi-Fi networks so that you can see the location and proximity of a Wi-Fi connection in relation to your current location. You can also use the search box to find shared Wi-Fi networks anywhere in the world.

Tap a Wi-Fi network on the map to see the status of that network. Tap Navigate to open directions to the network in Google Maps. Tap Details to see more information about the connection including its security, speed, and estimated walking distance.

When you tap the Map icon in Avast Wi-Fi Finder, a map of Wi-Fi networks opens where you can see the location and proximity of a Wi-Fi connection in relation to your current location.

Tap a Wi-Fi network on the map to open more information about the connection, including the security, speed, rating, and estimated walking distance. You can also go directly to your Apple Maps from the app for directions to the network.

What do each of the Wi-Fi network statuses mean?

Avast Wi-Fi Finder displays the status of each Wi-Fi network. The possible statuses are:

  • Saved on device: you can connect without knowing the password even if a password is required.
  • Password protected: you need a password to connect but the password is not known by Avast Wi-Fi Finder.
  • Open network: you do not need a password to connect.
  • Shared Wi-Fi: you need a password but the password has been shared with Avast Wi-Fi Finder so that you can connect.
  • Login required: you need to fulfill additional authentication in your browser to connect.
  • Wi-Fi shared by me: you shared the password with Avast Wi-Fi Finder so that other users can connect to the network.

Where does the Security and Speed information come from?

Avast Wi-Fi Finder can check the security and speed of Wi-Fi networks that you connect to. After the security and speed have been tested, the results are visible to all Avast Wi-Fi Finder users. If these ratings are not already available for a Wi-Fi network that you connect to, we recommend you Check the Security and Speed so that you and other users can access this information.

How can I check the Security and Speed of a Wi-Fi network?

If a Wi-Fi network does not already have a security or speed rating, Avast Wi-Fi Finder can test it after you connect. On the Wi-Fi tab, the network you are connected to appears at the top of the page. Tap Speed Test to test the speed. To test the security, tap More, then tap Check security. Avast Wi-Fi Finder verifies the following information:

Speed

  • Download (how fast you can pull data from the server)
  • Ping (how responsive the connection is)
  • Upload (how fast you can send data to others)

Security

  • Vulnerability to attacks (including whether the Wi-Fi network has already been hacked)
  • Wi-Fi protection and password strength
  • Router protection and password strength

What is the 'Find connected devices' option?

When you are connected to a Wi-Fi network, you can confirm how many other devices are connected to the same network.

Tap More then select Find connected devices. Avast Wi-Fi Finder scans the Wi-Fi network router for connected devices, then informs you of the number.

What are Offline Wi-Fi Network Packs?

The Offline tab provides you with a list of downloadable Wi-Fi network packs from all over the world. Each network pack contains public Wi-Fi networks for a select country or region. After you have downloaded a Wi-Fi network pack, you can access the Wi-Fi networks in the pack on the Available Wi-Fi or Map tabs of the app when you are not connected to the internet.

Downloaded network packs appear at the top of the list. If new Wi-Fi networks become available for a downloaded pack, the number of new networks are displayed and you have the option to update the pack directly. To remove a network pack from your device, tap the menu icon beside the pack, then tap Delete offline data.

When should I use an Offline Wi-Fi Network Pack?

Offline Wi-Fi Network Packs enable you to connect to public Wi-Fi networks even when you are not connected to the internet. For example, if you're travelling to a foreign country, download the Wi-Fi network pack for that country in advance. Once there, find and connect to Wi-Fi networks while offline. Additionally, if you're interested in saving as much mobile data as possible, turn the Force data saving option on in the app settings to use Offline Mode even when you're using your mobile data plan.

What is Smart Connect?

When you tap the Smart Connect button on the Wi-Fi tab, you are connected directly to the fastest and most secure available Wi-Fi network as determined by Avast Wi-Fi Finder.

Can I customize my Avast Wi-Fi Finder settings?

Yes. On the Tools tab, tap Notifications to open a list of notifications and specify how often you want to receive them, or tap Settings and specify your preferences for the following options:

  • Easy Connect: turn on to automatically connect to Wi-Fi networks that are known to your device when they are within range.
  • Force data saving: turn on to only use Offline Wi-Fi networks even when you have internet data.
  • Becomes our valued Beta tester: tap to be directed to Google Play Store where you can sign up to try new Avast Wi-Fi Finder functionality before it is released.

What happens when I share a Wi-Fi network with Avast Wi-Fi Finder?

When you add a public Wi-Fi network to Avast Wi-Fi Finder, other Avast Wi-Fi Finder users can connect to that Wi-Fi network without needing to know the password. To add a network to Avast Wi-Fi Finder, you need to successfully connect to that network first. Follow these steps:

  1. On the Wi-Fi tab, tap a Wi-Fi network that is In range.
  2. Tap Share Wi-Fi, then tap Continue.
  3. Provide the password for that network, then tap Connect & Share.

Always verify that a network is public before you add it to Avast Wi-Fi Finder.

How can I remove a previously shared Wi-Fi network from Avast Wi-Fi Finder?

If you previously shared a Wi-Fi network with Avast Wi-Fi Finder but you no longer want it to be available to other users, follow these steps:

  1. Ensure you are connected to the Wi-Fi network.
  2. On the Wi-Fi tab, tap More underneath the name of the Wi-Fi network.
  3. Tap Stop sharing or tap Report problem and select Hotspot is not public.

The Wi-Fi network is no longer available for other users to connect to.

How can I connect to a Wi-Fi network shown in Avast Wi-Fi Finder?

To connect to a Wi-Fi network that is part of the Avast Wi-Fi Finder database, go to the Wi-Fi section of your device Settings. Wi-Fi networks that are part of the Avast Wi-Fi Finder database are labelled with the sub-text Avast Wi-Fi Finder. You can connect to closed Wi-Fi networks without providing the password if Avast Wi-Fi Finder already knows the password.

What is Offline Mode?

Offline Mode gives you access to pre-downloaded Wi-Fi network packs when you are not connected to the internet.

When you tap the Offline Mode icon in the Avast Wi-Fi Finder interface, a list of downloadable Wi-Fi network packs opens. Each of these network packs contains public Wi-Fi networks for a select country or region. After you have downloaded a Wi-Fi network pack, you can access the Wi-Fi networks included in the pack from the Available Wi-Fi or Map sections of the app even when you are offline.

For each downloaded network pack, you can see the number of Wi-Fi networks that are in the pack and the amount of space the pack consumes. If new Wi-Fi networks become available for a downloaded network pack, you can see the number of new networks and have the option to update the pack directly.

When should I use Offline Mode?

Offline Mode enables you to connect to public Wi-Fi networks even when you are not connected to the internet. For example, if you're travelling to a foreign country, download the Wi-Fi network pack for that country in advance. Once there, find and connect to Wi-Fi networks while offline. Additionally, if you're interested in saving as much mobile data as possible, turn on the Activate on mobile data option which you can access by tapping the More icon in the app. When this setting is turned on, Avast Wi-Fi Finder uses Offline Mode even when you're using your mobile data plan.

What do each of the Wi-Fi network connection requirements mean?

Avast Wi-Fi Finder displays the connection requirements of each Wi-Fi network so that you know what information you need to connect. The possible connection requirements are:

  • Open network: you do not need a password.
  • Password required: you need a password but the password is not known by Avast Wi-Fi Finder.
  • Login needed: you need to fulfill additional authentication in your browser.
  • Internet verified: you can connect without knowing the password even if a password is required. Avast Wi-Fi Finder has confirmed the availability, and knows the password (if applicable) of Internet verified connections.

General

If I connect to my personal Wi-Fi network is it made available to Avast Wi-Fi Finder users?

No. Wi-Fi networks are not automatically added to the Avast Wi-Fi Finder database when you connect to them. You can only add a Wi-Fi network by successfully connecting to it via the Share Wi-Fi option.

Can I report Wi-Fi network problems?

If you discover that the location of a Wi-Fi network is incorrect or a Wi-Fi network doesn't exist, you can report the problem.

  1. Perform one of the following steps from the Wi-Fi tab:
    • For an In range or In walking distance Wi-Fi network, tap the name of the relevant Wi-Fi network in the list.
    • For the Connected Wi-Fi network, tap More under the name of the network at the top of the page.
  2. Tap Network detail, then tap Report a problem.
  3. Select the appropriate problem from the list.

Why do some Wi-Fi networks show a number of 'Successful connections'?

In the Network detail of many Wi-Fi networks, you can see the number of Successful connections followed by the subtext Internet verified. This figure indicates that at least one person has successfully connected to the network via Avast Wi-Fi Finder. Many networks that have been successfully connected to do not yet show this figure because we only started recording this information recently.

How can I become an Avast Wi-Fi Finder Beta Tester?

On the Settings tab, tap Become our valued Beta tester, then tap Join. As a Beta tester, you'll be the first to try new features.

How can I rate a Wi-Fi network on Avast Wi-Fi Finder?

You can rate Wi-Fi connections that you are connected to. On the information page of the connected Wi-Fi network, tap the Rating icon, then tap the Thumbs up or Thumbs down icon.

What does it mean if a Wi-Fi network does not have a rating on Avast Wi-Fi Finder?

The Wi-Fi network ratings on Avast Wi-Fi Finder are provided by our customers. If not enough ratings exist for a Wi-Fi network, no rating is given.
