Avast Omni Family Guardian - Getting Started

The Avast Omni Family Guardian app provides an overview of your connected household and allows you to set protections for all connected devices. Refer to the relevant sections in this article to learn more about how to use the Avast Omni Family Guardian app on Windows PC, Android, and iOS.

This article assumes that you have already installed Avast Omni on your home network. For detailed instructions, refer to the following article:

Windows PC

To access Avast Omni features, ensure Your Home is selected in the left panel. The status message Your home is protected, indicates that Avast Omni is correctly set up and providing real-time protection for all the devices connected to your home network. An exclamation point indicates that something needs your attention.

The following features are accessible from the Your Home screen:

  1. Household: Click Household in the left panel or the Household icon in the orb to view a list of devices assigned to your household. You can pause internet for all household devices or select a device from the Household Devices list to edit the details or pause internet for that device.
  2. Your Profile: Click your name in the left panel or your icon in the orb to view your profile. In your profile, click Edit Profile to upload an image for your orb icon or edit your name. If you already have a device assigned to your profile, it is listed here. To add a device to your profile, click Add a new device.
  3. User Profiles: After setting up user profiles, click a user's name in the left panel or their icon in the orb to access user settings. As the Family Guardian, you can manage the following settings for each user in your household: pause internet, edit or remove profile, set content filters, downtimes, and location alerts, and manage or add devices.
  4. New Member: Click New member in the left panel to create a new user profile. After creating a new profile, Avast Omni prompts you to assign or add a device. We recommend creating user profiles for all members of your household who use your internet.
  5. Assign Devices: Click the icon, then use the drop-down menu to choose an owner for each unassigned device Avast Omni has detected. Alternatively, click Block to prevent a device from using your internet.
  6. Data Usage: Click the Data used in 24h tile to view a bar graph displaying your household's internet usage for the past 24 hours.
  7. Omni Hub: Click the Omni Hub tile to access the Avast Omni real-time home protection shields (all enabled by default). To disable a shield (not recommended), click the green (ON) slider below a shield so that it changes to pink (OFF).
  8. Online Devices: Click the Online devices tile to view a list of all devices in your home network and whether they are currently online or offline. Click a device name to view more details, edit or remove the device, pause internet, block the device, or assign the device to a user profile. Click a user profile icon to access settings for that user.

Mobile

After setting up your Avast Omni hub and connecting it to your Avast Omni Family Guardian app, refer to the instructions below to access the Avast Omni features available on the Home Screen, Family Screen, and My Phone Screen.

Home screen

The Home screen provides an overview of your home network. The status message Your home is protected indicates that Avast Omni is correctly set up and providing real-time protection for all the devices connected to your home network. An exclamation point indicates that something needs your attention.

The following features are accessible from the Home screen:

  1. Your Profile: The user profile at the top of the orb is the Family Guardian profile. To view or edit your profile, tap your icon in the orb. Tap (three dots) and select Edit Profile to upload an image for your orb icon or edit your name. To enable location sharing, tap (three dots) and select Set location sharing. If you already have a device assigned to your profile, it is listed here. To add a device to your profile, tap Add Devices.
  2. Household: Tap the central Household icon in the orb to view a list of devices assigned to your household. You can Pause Internet for all devices on your home network or select a device from the list to edit the details or pause internet for that device. To add a device to your home network, tap Add Devices.
  3. User Profiles: After setting up a user profile, tap the orb icon to access user settings. As the Family Guardian, you can manage the following settings for each user in your household: pause internet; set location alerts, content filters, and downtimes; and manage or add devices. Tap (three dots) to edit the user profile, set location sharing, set primary device, or remove the profile.
  4. Data Usage: Tap the Data Used in 24H tile to view a bar graph displaying your household's internet usage for the past 24 hours.

Tap a device name to view more details and manage settings, such as pause internet,assign the device to a user profile, set up on-the-go protection or location tracking, or change the device details. To edit the device name or details, and to remove or block the device, tap (three dots) on the Device details screen.

  6. Online Devices: Tap the Online Devices tile to view a list of all devices in your home network and whether they are currently online or offline. Tap a device name to view more details and access settings such as, pause internet,assign the device to a user profile, set up on-the-go protection or location tracking, or change the device details. To edit the device name or details, and to remove or block the device, tap (three dots) on the Device details screen.
 

Family screen

The Family screen displays a list of all users set up on your home network. Here, you can quickly see which users are currently online. An exclamation point indicates that something needs your attention.

The following features are accessible from the Family screen:

  1. Create New User Profiles: Tap the add a family member icon in the top-right corner of the screen to create a new Adult or Child user profile.
  2. Your Profile: Tap your name to access settings for your profile. To upload an image for your orb icon or edit your name, go to (three dots) and select Edit Profile. To enable location sharing, tap (three dots) and select Set location sharing. If you already have a device assigned to your profile, it is listed here. To add a device to your profile, tap Add Devices.
  3. User Profiles: Tap a user profile to access the following settings for that user:
    • Pause internet: temporarily disable internet access, so the user cannot visit websites or use apps that require internet.
    • Location alerts: schedule specific times to receive a notification about the user's location, or receive an alert when the user arrives or leaves a specific location.
    • Content filters: block specific online content, apps, games, downloads, videos, and websites.
    • Downtime: disable internet access for the user at specific times, such as during school hours or overnight.
    • Add devices: assign devices to the user profile to keep track of which devices are in use.
    • Additional settings: tap (three dots) to edit the user profile, set location sharing, set primary device, or remove the profile.
  4. Household: Tap Household to view a list of devices assigned to your household. You can pause internet for all devices on your home network or select a device from the list to edit the details or pause internet for that device. To add a device to your home network, tap Add Devices.

Real-time device protection settings

Avast Omni includes shields that provide real-time protection for your device.

Three shields protect your device: Web Shield, App Shield, and File Shield. When you install the Avast Omni Family Guardian app, all shields are disabled. A notification badge on the My phone icon prompts you to turn on all shields for maximum protection.

To activate Web Shield:

  1. Tap the gray (OFF) slider next to Web Shield.
  2. Tap Go To Accessibility.
  3. Enable Avast Omni in your device's Accessibility Settings.
    The actual steps required vary depending on your device and Android version.

The Web Shield slider changes to green (ON).

 

To activate App Shield:

  1. Tap the gray (OFF) slider next to App Shield.

The App Shield slider changes to green (ON).

 

To activate File Shield:

  1. Tap the gray (OFF) slider next to File Shield.
  2. Tap Allow to grant permission for Avast Omni to access photos, media, and files on your device.

The File Shield slider changes to green (ON).

When all shields are enabled, the status message at the top of the My phone screen indicates This phone is protected.

Avast Omni Web Shield protects your device by blocking malicious websites. When you install the Avast Omni Family Guardian app, Web Shield is disabled. A notification badge on the My iPhone icon prompts you to turn on Web Shield for maximum protection.

To activate Web Shield:

  1. Tap the pink (OFF) slider next to Web Shield.
  2. Review the VPN service notice, then tap Accept.
    A VPN profile is required if you want to use Avast Omni's content filtering feature.
  3. Tap Allow to grant permission for Avast Omni to add VPN configurations.

The Web Shield slider changes to green (ON) and the status message at the top of the screen changes to indicate This iPhone is protected.
