Avast Family Space - Getting Started

Avast Family Space is a parental assistance application that gives you control over your family's mobile devices. The product operates using 2 different applications:

  • Avast Family Space for parents: runs on 1 device (the administrator device).
  • Avast Family Space for kids: runs on up to 10 monitored devices.

Both apps are supported on iOS and Android. Refer to the sections in this article to start using Avast Family Space for parents on Android and iOS.

This article assumes that Avast Family Space is already installed and activated on your mobile device. For detailed instructions, refer to the following articles:

Open Avast Family Space

  • Tap the Avast Family Space for parents icon on your device's Home screen.

Avast Family Space for parents is now open.

Manage a family member profile

From the main Avast Family Space for parents screen, you can manage family member profiles. Refer to the instructions below to pause internet, manage location alerts, set time limits, and customize content filters for each family member.

Pause Internet

This feature allows you to pause your family member's internet and data connection from the parent device. To pause internet:

  1. At the top of the main Avast Family Space screen, select a family member.
  2. Tap Pause Internet.
  3. Select Pause to confirm.

Your family member's internet is now paused. To unpause, repeat step 1 above, then tap Unpause Internet.

 

Manage location alerts

This feature allows you to set both Arrival/Departure Alerts, which are sent to the parent device when the selected family member arrives to or departs from a specific location, and Scheduled Alerts, which provide the location of the selected family member at a specified time. To set a location alert:

  1. At the top of the main Avast Family Space screen, select a family member.
  2. Tap Location Alerts.
  3. Select one of the following alert options:
    • Arrival/Departure Alerts: select an existing arrival/departure alert to customize it, or tap Add Alert to create a new arrival/departure alert for the selected family member.
    • Scheduled Alerts: select an existing scheduled alert to customize it, or tap Add Alert to create a new scheduled alert for the selected family member.

Location and scheduled alerts are now specified.

 

Set a time limit

This feature allows you to set both School hours time limits, which allow you to pause internet and data connection on the selected family member's device during school hours, and Night hours time limits, which allow you to pause internet and data connection on the selected family member's device during nighttime hours. To set a time limit:

  1. At the top of the main Avast Family Space screen, select a family member.
  2. Tap Limits.
  3. Select one of the following time limit categories:
    • School hours: customize school hours for the selected family member. Tap Save to confirm.
    • Night hours: customize night hours for the selected family member. Tap Save to confirm.
  4. Alternatively, select Add a Time Limit, customize the name, days, and start and end times, then tap Save to confirm.

During the specified hours in all Limits categories, all internet access is blocked. Regular phone calls and text (SMS) messages are allowed.

 

Customize content filters

This feature allows you to block specific app categories, apps (subcategories), and websites on the selected family member's device. To manage content filters:

  1. At the top of the main Avast Family Space screen, select a family member.
  2. Tap Content Filters.
  3. Select a content filter to access subcategories.
  4. Tap the slider next to each subcategory you want to block, so that it changes from gray (Unblocked) to orange (Blocked), then tap Save to confirm.
  5. Additionally, tap Websites to add a Trusted website, which can always be accessed, or a Blocked website, which can never be accessed.

Content filters for the selected family member are now customized.

From the main Avast Family Space for parents screen, you can manage family member profiles. Refer to the instructions below to pause internet, manage location alerts, set time limits, and customize content filters for each family member.

Pause Internet

This feature allows you to pause your family member's internet and data connection from the parent device. To pause internet:

  1. At the top of the main Avast Family Space screen, select a family member.
  2. Tap Pause Internet.
  3. Select Pause to confirm.

Your family member's internet is now paused. To unpause, repeat step 1 above, then tap Unpause Internet.

 

Manage location alerts

Set a time limit

This feature allows you to set both School hours time limits, which allow you to pause internet and data connection on the selected family member's device during school hours, and Night hours time limits, which allow you to pause internet and data connection on the selected family member's device during nighttime hours. To set a time limit:

  1. At the top of the main Avast Family Space screen, select a family member.
  2. Tap Limits.
  3. Select one of the following time limit categories:
    • School hours: customize school hours for the selected family member. Tap Save to confirm.
    • Night hours: customize night hours for the selected family member. Tap Save to confirm.
  4. Alternatively, select Add A Time Limit and customize the name, days, and start and end times, then tap Save to confirm.

During the specified hours in all Limits categories, all internet access is blocked. Regular phone calls and text (SMS) messages are allowed.

 

Customize content filters

This feature allows you to block specific app categories, apps (subcategories), and websites on the selected family member's device. To manage content filters:

    1. At the top of the main Avast Family Space screen, select a family member.
    2. Tap Content Filters.
    3. Select a content filter to access subcategories.
    4. Tap the slider next to each subcategory you want to block, so that it changes from gray (Unblocked) to orange (Blocked), then tap Save to confirm.
    5. Additionally, tap Websites to add a Trusted website, which can always be accessed, or a Blocked website, which can never be accessed.

Content filters for the selected family member are now customized.

Add a family member

After installing and activating Avast Family Space, each family member is visible at the top of the the parent application home screen. Follow the instructions below to add another family member to the parent application.

  1. Open Avast Family Space for parents.
  2. At the top of the main Avast Family Space screen, tap Add (the plus sign).
  3. Type the family member's name into the text box, tap Add Family Member, then select an appropriate content filter for that family member.
    • High: recommended for family members under the age of 11.
    • Medium: recommended for family members between the ages of 12-16.
    • Low: recommended for family members aged 17 or older.
    • No Level: recommended for family members aged 18 or older.
  4. Manage each content filter category (objectionable content, social media, and messaging apps) by tapping one of the following buttons when prompted:
    • Customize: selecting this option allows you to block a sub-category by tapping the relevant slider so that it changes to orange (ON), or allow a sub-category by tapping the relevant slider so that it changes to gray (OFF). Tap Save to save your customizations and continue to the next content filter screen.
    • Block: selecting this option automatically blocks all sub-categories within the content filter category. The next content filter screen opens.
    • Not Now: selecting this option skips customization completely. You can return to the content filter customization for each family member at any time. The next content filter screen opens.
  5. When all content filter categories are customized, blocked, or skipped, you can add a location alert for that family member. Tap Add Home, enter a label and address into the text box and click Save. Tap Pair to confirm the location alert. Alternatively, tap Not Now to skip home alert setup and continue application setup.
  1. Open Avast Family Space for parents.
  2. At the top of the main Avast Family Space screen, tap Add (the plus sign).
  3. Type the family member's name into the text box, tap Add Family Member, then select an appropriate content filter for that family member.
    • High: recommended for family members under the age of 11.
    • Med: recommended for family members between the ages of 12-16.
    • Low: recommended for family members aged 17 or older.
    • No filters: recommended for family members aged 18 or older.
  4. Manage each content filter category (objectionable content, social media, and messaging apps) by tapping one of the following buttons when prompted:
    • Customize: selecting this option allows you to block a sub-category by tapping the relevant slider so that it changes to orange (ON), or allow a sub-category by tapping the relevant slider so that it changes to gray (OFF). Tap Save to save your customizations and continue to the next content filter screen.
    • Block: selecting this option automatically blocks all sub-categories within the content filter category. The next content filter screen opens.
    • Not now: selecting this option skips customization completely. You can return to the content filter customization for each family member at any time. The next content filter screen opens.
  5. When all content filter categories are customized, blocked, or skipped, you can add a location alert for that family member. To add a location alert, tap Add Home, enter a label and address into the text box, and click Save. Tap Pair to confirm the location alert. Alternatively, tap Skip to skip home alert setup and continue application setup.

The new family member is now added to the parent app.

Pair the parent and child devices

After you add a family member to the parent app, you can pair your device with the newly added family member's device.

  1. Open Avast Family Space for parents.
  2. Ensure your newly added family member profile is selected at the top of the screen, then tap Pair Phone.
  3. Select either Email or Text to send an invitation to your family member's device.
  4. On the child's device, open the invitation link, and tap Install to download and install the Avast Family Space for kids app.
     
    If the invitation link does not open, try to enter it in a different browser, or search for Avast Family Space for kids in Google Play Store, then tap Install and try to open the invitation link again.
  5. On the Home screen of the child's device, tap the Avast Family Space for kids icon to open the app, and follow the on-screen instructions on the parent device to complete pairing with Avast Family Space for parents.
  1. Open Avast Family Space for parents.
  2. Ensure your newly added family member profile is selected at the top of the screen, then tap Pair Phone.
  3. Select Send Text to send an invitation to your family member's device. To skip this step, tap Later.
  4. On the child's device, open the invitation link, and tap Install to download and install the Avast Family Space for kids app.
     
    If the invitation link does not open, try to enter it in a different browser, or search for Avast Family Space for kids in the App Store, then tap Install and try to open the invitation link again.
  5. On the Home screen of the child's device, tap the Avast Family Space for kids icon to open the app, and follow the on-screen instructions on the parent device to complete pairing with Avast Family Space for parents.

The devices are now paired. You can now manage the family member's profile from the parent device.

Access family member settings

Avast family member settings allow you to view and edit family member profiles and settings.

  1. Open Avast Family Space for parents.
  2. Tap Settings (the gear icon) in the top-right corner of the Avast Family Space main screen.
  3. Select Manage Family.
  4. Select a family member from the list, and manage the following settings:
    • Family member: tap the family member's name to edit their profile picture and name.
    • Role: tap this option to view information about the family member's capabilities within Avast Family Space.
    • Location sharing: tap this option to specify which family members can view the selected device's location.
    • Avast Family Space for kids: tap this option to view the activation status of the selected family member's device. To unpair the device from Avast Family Space for parents, tap Unpair Phone.
    • Remove from Avast Family Space: tap this option to remove the selected family member's device from Avast Family Space for parents.
  1. Open Avast Family Space for parents.
  2. Tap Settings (the gear icon) in the top-right corner of the Avast Family Space main screen.
  3. Select My Family.
  4. Select a family member from the list, and manage the following settings:
    • Family member: tap the family member's name to edit their profile picture and name.
    • Role: tap this option to view information about the family member's capabilities within Avast Family Space.
    • Location sharing: tap this option to specify which family members can view the selected device's location.
    • Avast Family Space for kids: tap this option to view the activation status of the selected family member's device. To unpair the device from Avast Family Space for parents, tap Unpair Phone.
    • Remove from Avast Family Space: tap this option to remove the selected family member's device from Avast Family Space for parents.

From the settings screen, you can also access Avast Family Space app settings.

Access Avast Family Space app settings

Avast Family Space settings allow you to send feedback, view application version, configure personal privacy, and log out of Avast Family Space.

  1. Open Avast Family Space for parents.
  2. Tap Settings (the gear icon) in the top-right corner of the Avast Family Space main screen.
  3. Select one of the following Avast Family Space settings:
    • Send feedback: tap this option to send feedback about Avast Family Space.
    • About: tap this option to view the End User License Agreement, Privacy Policy, license information, and your current app version.
    • Personal Privacy: tap this option to view the Privacy Policy. Additionally, tap the slider next to Share usage data so that it changes from orange (Enabled) to gray (Disabled) to opt out of sharing usage data with third parties for analytics.
    • Log out: tap this option to log the parent device out of Avast Family Space.
  1. Open Avast Family Space for parents.
  2. Tap Settings (the gear icon) in the top-right corner of the Avast Family Space main screen.
  3. Select one of the following Avast Family Space settings:
    • Personal Privacy: tap this option to view the Privacy Policy. Additionally, tap the slider next to Share usage data so that it changes from orange (Enabled) to gray (Disabled) to opt out of sharing usage data with third parties for analytics.
    • Send feedback: tap this option to send feedback about Avast Family Space.
    • About: tap this option to view the End User License Agreement, Privacy Policy, license information, and your current app version.
    • Log out: tap this option to log the parent device out of Avast Family Space.
