Avast One Quarantine - Getting Started

Quarantine is a safe place in Avast One for storing potentially harmful files and completely isolating them from the rest of your operating system. Files inside Quarantine cannot be accessed or run by any outside processes, software applications, or viruses.

Refer to the sections in this article to learn how to manage files in Quarantine.

Move files to Quarantine

Avast One automatically moves malicious files to Quarantine in the following ways:

  • If an Avast One scan detects a suspicious file and you confirm that the detected file should be moved to Quarantine.
  • If an active Avast One shield detects a suspicious file.

Alternatively, you can move files to Quarantine manually by following the steps below:

  1. Open Avast One, then select Explore ▸ Quarantine.
  2. Click Open Quarantine.
  3. Click + Add a new file.
  4. Locate the file on your PC and click Open.

The file now appears in Quarantine and can be sent for analysis.

Restore files from Quarantine

Restoring files from Quarantine poses a high security risk. This action requires advanced skills and experience in handling infected files. It is only intended for specific situations (for example, if a critical system file is accidentally moved to Quarantine).

To move a file out of Quarantine:

  1. Open Avast One, then select Explore ▸ Quarantine.
  2. Click Open Quarantine.
  3. Tick the box next to the relevant file in Quarantine.
  4. Click … More options (three dots), then select an action:
    • Restore: Move the file back to its original location on your PC.
    • Create exceptions & restore: Move the file back to its original location, and add the file to your exceptions list to exclude it from all Avast One scans and shields. To view your exceptions list, go to Account ▸ Settings ▸ Exceptions.
    • Restore as: Move the file to a chosen location on your PC.
  5. Click Close.

Submit files to Avast Threat Labs

Any suspicious file, or file incorrectly identified as a threat, can be submitted directly from Quarantine to Avast Threat Labs for further analysis. We recommend sending the following file types:

  • Potential malware: Files that Avast One has not identified as malware, but you believe may be malicious.
  • False positive: Files that Avast One has identified as malware, but you believe may be clean.

To submit a file to Avast Threat Labs:

  1. Open Avast One, then select Explore ▸ Quarantine.
  2. Click Open Quarantine.
  3. Tick the box next to the relevant file in Quarantine.
  4. Click … More options (three dots) and select Send for analysis.
  5. Select either Potential malware or False positive and enter any additional information about the file into the text box, then click Send. If you are submitting a False positive, specify the Program name, Program publisher, Program version number, and the reason why you believe the file or program should not have been detected.
  6. Click Close.

The file is submitted to Avast Threat Labs for further testing. In most cases, Avast Threat Labs processes the files they receive without sending a response to you.

Delete files from Quarantine

This action permanently deletes files from your PC and cannot be undone.
  1. Open Avast One, then select Explore ▸ Quarantine.
  2. Click Open Quarantine.
  3. Tick the box next to the relevant file in Quarantine, then click Delete.
  4. Click Yes, delete to confirm permanently deleting the file.
