Avast Cleanup Premium for Mac - Getting Started

Avast Cleanup Premium scans for and removes unnecessary and duplicate files on your Mac to clear disk space. This article assumes that Avast Cleanup Premium is installed and activated on your Mac. For detailed instructions, refer to the following articles:

To get started, open Avast Cleanup Premium using one of the following methods:

  • Click the Avast Cleanup Premium icon in the menu bar, then select Open Avast Cleanup Premium.
  • Click Go in the menu bar and select Applications, then double-click the Avast Cleanup icon.
After opening Avast Cleanup Premium, if you see a message prompting you to allow full disk access, refer to the following article for instructions:

Clear disk space

The Clean clutter option scans your Mac for unnecessary files and allows you to select which files are deleted to clear disk space. To start a scan and remove files, follow these steps:

  1. Click Scan under Clean clutter on the main Avast Cleanup Premium screen.
  2. If prompted, select the relevant option according to your preference:
    • Don't Allow: Stops Avast Cleanup Premium from scanning your Downloads folder.
    • OK: Includes your Downloads folder in the Clean Clutter scan.
  3. When the scan completes, Avast Cleanup Premium automatically selects recommended files to delete. To change this selection, use one of the following methods:
    1. Click the tabs in the left panel, then untick any files you do not want to delete.
    2. Click Recommended selection and select an option from the context menu.
  4. After selecting files to delete, click Clean.
  5. If prompted, enter your administrator User Name and Password, then click OK.
  6. Click Done to return to the main Avast Cleanup Premium screen.

Remove duplicate files

The Find duplicates option scans your Mac for duplicate files. To start a scan and remove duplicate files, follow these steps:

  1. Click Find under Find duplicates on the main Avast Cleanup Premium screen.
  2. Tick the box next to the location(s) you want to scan for duplicate files. To add additional folders or external drives, click Add then select a folder or drive.
  3. Click Scan to start searching for duplicate files.
  4. If you are prompted for access to your Desktop or Documents folder, click the relevant option according to your preferences:
    • Don't Allow: Stops Avast Cleanup Premium from scanning your Desktop or Documents folder.
    • OK: Includes your Desktop or Documents folder in the Find duplicates scan.
  5. After the scan completes, click View Duplicates.
  6. Select files to remove from your Mac by using one of the following methods:
    1. Click the tabs in the left panel, then tick the box next to the files you want to delete.
    2. Click the down arrow next to Nothing selected, then select an option from the context menu.
  7. After selecting files to remove, click Clean.
  8. If prompted, enter your administrator User Name and Password, then click OK.
  9. Click Done to return to the main Avast Cleanup Premium screen.

Identify bad or similar photos

The Find photos option scans your Mac for photos that are blurry, badly lit, or similar. To start a scan and review bad or similar photos, follow these steps:

  1. Click Find under Find photos on the main Avast Cleanup Premium screen.
  2. Tick the box next to the location(s) you want to scan for photos. To add additional folders, external drives, or specific photos, click Add, then select the folder, drive, or photo.
  3. Click Scan to start searching for bad or similar photos.
  4. When the scan completes, click Review to see all the bad or similar photos that Avast Cleanup Premium has found.
  5. Click Got It to remove the pop-up message.
  6. Avast Cleanup Premium automatically selects recommended photos to delete. To change this selection, click Recommended, then select Select none. Now tick the box below each individual photo you want to delete.
  7. After selecting files to delete, click Remove.
  8. Click Remove to confirm deletion of your selected files.
  9. Repeat steps 4-8 above to continue reviewing and deleting files.
  10. Click Done to return to the main Avast Cleanup Premium screen.

Uninstall apps you no longer use

The Uninstall apps option allows you to easily find and remove applications you no longer use, which keeps your Mac tidy and frees up space. To uninstall apps you no longer use, follow these steps:

  1. Click Show under Uninstall apps on the main Avast Cleanup Premium screen.
  2. Tick the box next to an app to select it. You can also filter the list of apps using the categories Unused apps and Large apps in the left panel.
  3. After selecting apps to remove, click Uninstall.
  4. Click Uninstall to confirm removal of the apps from your Mac.
  5. If prompted, enter your administrator User Name and Password, then click OK.
  6. Click Done to return to the main Avast Cleanup Premium screen.

Manage preferences

You can customize Avast Cleanup Premium by changing the default scan settings, or by managing the default alert notification settings. To adjust Avast Cleanup Premium scan settings or alerts:

  1. Ensure the Avast Cleanup Premium window is active, then click Avast Cleanup on the left side of the menu bar, and select Preferences.
  2. Select the Scanning tab to make changes to the default settings for Cleaning clutter, Finding duplicates, Finding photos, and Uninstalling apps.
    • Tick the box next to a setting to enable it, or untick the box to disable the setting.
    • Click the drop-down box to select a different option.
  3. Select the Alerts tab to make changes to the notifications when a specified amount of clutter is detected on your Mac.
    • Tick the box next to a setting to enable it, or untick the box to disable the setting.
    • Click the drop-down box to select a different option.
