 avast! 4.8 Anti-rootkit and Anti-spyware built-in features/settings
These features are integrated into the normal scans and run automatically on every system startup. This means there is no need for any special system tray icons and no action is required by the user etc..

The option to disable rootkit scan on system startup is available under under -> avast! Program settings -> Troubleshooting.

The Boot-time scan will also search for rootkits using “raw disk access” based on the standard avast! scanning engine which is able to detect rootkits for which the signatures are held in the current VPS.

The option to disable raw disk access in avast! is available under -> avast! Program settings -> Troubleshooting.

Simple user interface scan:

After you select the area to scan, a bar with a slider appears. By moving the slider, you can specify the scanner sensitivity. There are three levels:

Quick scan => Without rootkit scan

Standard scan => With “Super quick rootkit scan
- scans hidden processes
- scans boot sector rootkits
- scans the SYSTEM32\DRIVERS directory
- scans hidden services

Thorough scan => With “Quick rootkit scan
- scans hidden processes
- scans boot sector rootkits
- scans the windows directory
- scans hidden services

The same settings will be used for the registry scan.

Enhanced User Interface tasks:

Right click on Tasks -> Create new -> Areas -> click on Add button:

Auto-Start Programs – Checking startup items for the logged user
Auto-Start Programs (All Users) - Checking startup items for all created users

Rootkits (full scan) :
- scans hidden processes
- scans boot sector rootkits
- scans the whole system drive
- scans hidden services
- scans HKLM
- scans HKCU

Rootkits (quick scan) :
- scans hidden processes
- scans boot sector rootkits
- scans the windows directory
- scans hidden services

It is strongly recommended to switch off every running application to prevent false positive alerts.
